Freshman netminder
Simon Latkoczy has been named the Hockey Commissioners Association National Goaltender of the Month for January.
Latkoczy, who was the January NCHC Goalie of the Month, went 3-0-0 in four appearances for the Mavericks in the opening month of 2023. His 0.82 GAA led the NCHC and was first nationally in January, while his .974 save percentage was second in the NCAA and first among all players with more than one game played in the month. The Trencin, Slovakia native led the NCHC in both categories. He totaled 112 saves while his average of 28.00 saves per game also topped the conference for the month.
Latkoczy has pitched back-to-back shutouts in his last two starts for the Mavericks. His most recent outing was a career high 40-save shutout over the then No. 9 Western Michigan Broncos, who boasted the NCAA's highest scoring offense at 4.37 goals per game that weekend. He posted a 1.20 GAA, .968 save% with 60 saves in two appearances against the Broncos. On January 21st, the Maverick rookie backstopped Omaha to a 2-0 victory against the Miami RedHawks where he turned aside all 21 shots he faced. Latkoczy's first triumph of the month came in the form of a 6-1 besting of the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Before his January 28th performance against WMU, the 31 saves he made against the Bulldogs was a career high.
In each of his last nine appearances, he has allowed just two goals or less. In those nine games, Latkoczy has let up only 10 goals and registered a 1.15 GAA, .956 save percentage and two shutouts. For the 2022-23 campaign, the Freshman Maverick is 7-2-0 with a 1.82 GAA and .932 save%.
The Mavericks are the least penalized team in the NCHC. In Latkoczy's January appearances, he helped Omaha go 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. In those six kills, he turned away 15 shots.
After being idle last weekend, Latkoczy and the Mavericks get back to game action this weekend when they welcome the Colorado College Tigers to town.
