Mavericks Win First Contest of the Season after Victory Over the Flames

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Mavericks bounced back time in their second contest of the season, beating the College of Saint Mary's 89-59.
 
Leaders For Omaha
In tonight's match 11 different Mavericks scored at least three points, led once again by freshman Cora Olsen with 15 points. Olsen collected five field goals (5-of-11), one three-pointer (1-of-2), and four free throws (4-of-7). She also paced the team with four steals and one block. Freshman Lucy Ghaifan followed just behind Olsen with 14 total points, going a perfect 7-of-7 on her field goals. Aalihyah Stanley lead the team with four assists and five rebounds. Stanley also picked up eight points off three baskets and two three-point field goals. 
 
Leaders for College of Saint Mary's
Tia Murray totaled 23 points on 10 field gaols (10-of-17), leading her teammates by a margin of 15 points. Murray also led the Flames with 10 rebounds and one block. Madison Guzman totaled eight points off two field goals (2-of-5) and paced the team with three rebounds.

Team Stats
Omaha shot 45.5% (35-of-77) to St. Mary's 40% (22-of-55). Though there was a 5.5% differential, the Mavericks produced 22 more shots. While the Flames may have had a high shot percentage in 3-pointers (25%, 8-of-32 vs. 28.6%, 4-of-14), Omaha took over double the amount of shots behind the arc, sinking double. Both teams were perfectly even on free throws, logging 73.3% (11-of-15) each. 

Inside the First Quarter
The Mavericks had a slow start to the game, falling behind 0-4 in the opening minutes. Sam Mitchell got the ball rolling with a three-point jumper to close the gap to three at 8:23. The contest was tied at 5:21 with a jumper outside the arch, making it a 12-12 game. After a steal from Olson, Deanay Watson sunk a jump shot to take the lead for the Mavericks. The first quarter was capped off with a three-pointer by Katie Keitges, making it 22-17. 

As for the Flames, they were held to just one three-point FG. Despite falling behind midway through the quarter, they kept pace only allowing a maximum margin of five points. 
 
Inside the Second Quarter
Grace Cave got an early jump in the second setting the pace for the Mavericks. After being fouled while going up for a shot, she sank two free throws. The Mavericks had pulled ahead to by 19 after a fastbreak layup by Olsen, who drew a foul for a plus-one at the 0:36 mark.  The Mavericks put up 10 field goals, two three-points, and went a perfect 3-3 on the free throw line. 

The Mavericks contained the Flames to only 13 points. CSM had nine turnovers in the second, with one steal by Olsen. Guzman closed it to nine, with a layup in the paint at 5:21. After giving up 25 points to Omaha, the half closed out 47-30. 

Inside the Third Quarter
Olsen got the half going with two free throws at 8:47. After a rest from the media timeout, the Mavericks scored five consecutive points. Seven of the 17 points scored in the third came from free-throw going 7-of-10. Kennedi Grant made two steals in the second and put up four points. 

The Mavericks had their most prolific quarter against the Flames has they were contained to just 11 points. Chainey Thompson led in the third with six points after two three-pointers.  
 
Inside the Fourth Quarter
The Mavericks had a back and fourth period, but got their margin up 24 after a basket behind the arc by Olsen, assisted by Cave, making it 68-47. Ghaifan heated up with back-to-back layups and a defensive rebound that led to a layup by Mitchell. The Mavericks' final score was polished off with a jump shot by Allison Stephens outside the paint, making it 89-57. 

 The Flames had a head start opening the final 10 with two free throws. The quarter was led by Tia Murray, who accounted for 10 of the 18 points. They finished the game with two-additional free throws to make the final score 89-57.

The Mavericks will travel to Northwestern this Sunday, Nov. 12 for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
