Omaha Finishes Regular Season with Match at SDSU

LEADING OFF 

The Mavericks and Jackrabbits of South Dakota State play the final match of the Summit League regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in Brookings, South Dakota. 

QUICK KICKS 

  • The match was originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17 but had to be postponed due to poor field conditions after a thunderstorm swept across South Dakota. 

  • The match will determine the final standings as South Dakota State holds second place with 14 points and Omaha sits in fourth place with 12 points. 

  • With a win, the Mavericks would take second place, securing a first-round bye and the advantage of hosting the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the 2023 Summit League Women's Soccer Championship beginning on Friday, Oct. 27. 

  • With a loss, Omaha would remain in fourth place and travel to Denver, Colo., on Friday to take on the No. 5 seed South Dakota. 

  • The Mavericks earned their third victory in League play with a 4-0 win at St. Thomas on Sunday, Oct. 22. 

  • Alyssa Kellar recorded six points in the win with two goals and two assists. 

  • Sophia Green netted the game winner over St. Thomas in the eighth minute. Green leads the Mavericks with nine goals, 22 points and 48 shots through 15 matches. 

  • Jordyn West and Grace Ostergaard have started 74 matches for the Mavericks and share the Division I era program record for career starts. 

  • Omaha is 2-0-2 in the month of October as the Mavericks are unbeaten in their last four matches after a 2-1 loss to Oral Roberts on Sept. 28. 

  • Omaha was tabbed third in the Summit League Preseason Poll after finishing third in the regular season last year. Grace Ostergaard and Regan Zimmers were named Players to Watch. 

  • Head coach Tim Walters enters his seventh season at the helm. He has recorded 49 wins on the pitch, including three Summit League semifinal wins, one Summit League championship and a NCAA Tournament appearance. 

  • Five newcomers joined the Mavericks this season, including four freshmen and one redshirt-sophomore transfer. 

SCOUTING THE SOUTH DAKOTA STATE JACKRABBITS 

The Jackrabbits of South Dakota State played to a 0-0 draw with Kansas City on Sunday, moving their record to 11-3-2, 4-1-2 in Summit League play. Headed into the final match, the Jackrabbits can finish no worse than third place in the league and can claim the No. 2 seed with a win or a draw. SDSU leads the Summit League in points per game (6.44), goals per game (2.188), and goals allowed per game (0.81). 

JACKRABBITS TO WATCH 

• Avery Murdzek leads the Jackrabbits with six goals and 15 points. Murdzek tallied a brace of goals on Oct. 15 against St. Thomas. The junior is tied for third on the team with three assists this season. 

• Jadenn Carrillo ranks second on South Dakota State with five goals on the year. Carrillo last scored in a 1-1 draw against Oral Roberts on Oct. 19. The senior transfer from Concordia University Irvine also tallied an assist against Idaho state earlier this season. 

• Goalkeeper Jocelyn Tanner leads the Summit League with an average of .831 goals allowed per game through 15 starts. Over 16 total appearances in goal, Tanner has stopped 37 of 49 shots on goal, garnering a save percentage of .755. 

SERIES HISTORY 
South Dakota State leads the all-time series 9-8-4 over Omaha. The Mavericks and Jackrabbits last met in the 2022 Summit League semifinal match, when Omaha shut out SDSU by a score of 1-0 to advance to the championship match. The Mavericks are just 2-5-3 in their last 10 meetings with the Jacks.
