The Omaha Mavericks Track & Field team successfully got their 2023 Indoor season underway this weekend after competing at the Graduate Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska. There was no shortage of highlights from the season debut.
Starting with the 1000 meters race. Sophomore distance runner
Gwen Steffen placed 6th with a time of 3:07.69. In the mile, freshman distance runner
Kamryn Ensley made her indoor debut and finished 11th with a time of 5:12.85. Lauren Metzger made her Omaha debut and finished 13th with a time of 5:13.92. Senior
Maya Nachtigal finished 14th and set her indoor PR with a 5:18.37 time. Maddie Yardley rounded out the Omaha top-20 mile finishes with her 5:20.76 time which was good for 17th. Lastly for individual distance races,
Maret Elgren PR'd in the 3000m with a time of 10:51.40.
The DMR quartet of
Gwen Steffen,
Vanessa Gunderson,
Paige Blackford and
Kamryn Ensley ran the fastest season kickoff DMR in the D1 era with a time of 12:30.37.
Emma Klein had a season best jump of 36'6.75" in the triple jump to finish 4th. Addi Webster tied her personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.32.
Tania Gleason ran a lifetime best of 8.03 in the 60m while
Carrie Simonson also ran a lifetime best in the 60m with a time of 7.79 good for 8th place. That time is just .01 outside of the all-time top 10 list.
Mary Fennessy had a PR distance of 53'9.25" in the weight throw to improve her spot at number four in school history.
"We had some good performances this weekend which showed me that there were people who stepped up and put in the training over break," Omaha head coach
Chris Richardson said. "The competition is going to keep getting better from here so there's a lot of work still to do to."
