The Omaha Mavericks Men's Tennis team has signed four newcomers to the team before the upcoming season. A pair of incoming freshmen in Ethan Gaubert and Ryoma Mishiro along with Quintan Van Wijk and Bryan Kuntz who will both be entering their sophomore years.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Ethan Gaubert joins the Mavericks with a Universal Tennis Ranking (UTR) of 11.85. He ranked in the Top 25 in Australian national rankings in 2019 and Top 25 in French rankings for 2021.
A native of Fujisawa, Japan, Ryoma Mishiro enters his freshman year with Omaha ranking in the Top 50 nationally in the US for 18's in 2021. The incoming Maverick also ranked in the Top 500 for juniors (18 & under) in the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Mishiro also boasts a 11.88 UTR.
Bryan Kuntz, an international transfer from Clearwater, Florida, holds the highest UTR ranking of the four at 11.97. He was ranked in the Top 20 in South America in 16's and Top 10 in Brazil for the 18's.
Rounding out the new signees is Quintan Van Wijk. A transfer from Davenport University and a native of Willemstad, Curacao. Van Wijk owns an impressive 19-4 singles record. He finished the regular season year winning nine of 10 singles matches. Van Wijk was named the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and was also tabbed First Team All-GLIAC.
"It took a bit longer than normal to fill the empty roster spots for fall 2022, but I'm so glad these are the four that are joining our team," Tennis head coach Matt Barlow said. "I can tell you from our preseason trip that we have found some guys who are not only talented but will represent UNO the right way. I am extremely excited to start working with these guys on the court next week!"
The Maverick Men's Tennis team will get their fall season underway in just under a month when they head to the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, September 16-18.
