With its focus rightfully on the Summit League postseason race heading into the last two weekends of the regular season, Omaha will step away from conference play for a quick trip downtown on Tuesday.
The Mavericks (21-24) are set to face Creighton (25-15) at 6:30 p.m. at Charles Schwab Park. Omaha claimed the first meeting between the city's Division I teams 5-3 at Tal Anderson Field back on March 8.
Five days later, the Mavericks edged Nebraska, making this year the first since they transitioned to the D-I level that they've beaten both of their state's other programs within the same season. Omaha then topped the Huskers again a few weeks later to secure at least a .500 record in 2022 local rivalry games.
"You don't want to put too much into it, overthink it or overdo it. But it's fun [for our guys] to play against guys they grew up playing against on the other two in-state teams,"
Maverick coach
Evan Porter said. "It gets a little more traction around here. To be able to not bus three hours somewhere is another motivator to get a midweek game in. We're fortunate to have a couple of teams within 45 miles."
Omaha has held its own in its series with the Bluejays recently, winning three of their five matchups since the start of the 2020 season. Creighton had taken eight straight – from 2015-19 – prior to that.
Porter said the Bluejays are "having a heck of a season" this spring. They've gone 14-3 in home games.
Neither team has named its starter for Tuesday night. Porter said he hopes to have a chance to win late.
"Tuesday will be a big one. That's a fun place to play –the College World Series home," he said. "To be in the ballgame, when it's the eighth and ninth, is the ultimate goal. Then it comes down to timely hitting or a big play on defense. … Baseball is such a fascinating game. Anything can happen on any given day."
