FARGO, N.D. — In a Summit League series reduced to a Sunday doubleheader due to winter weather, Omaha Baseball split a twin bill with North Dakota State in Fargo on Sunday. They were the first home games of the season for the Bison.
Omaha (13-18, 8-6 Summit) won the opener 6-5 before dropping the nightcap 6-1 to North Dakota State (6-23, 3-8). The Mavericks took four of five from the Bison in the series this year.
In Game 1, Omaha built a 2-0 lead in the opening frame as the first four Maverick batters reached safely.
Chase Diggins,
Henry Zipay and
Jackson Trout each singled, and
Nick Riggs walked with the bases loaded to bring home the game's first run. An RBI groundout by
Tyler Bishop brought home another run.
Omaha staked starting pitcher
Maddox Meyer to a 6-0 lead in the third on two-run singles from both
Hayden Lewis and
Cardel Dick. Meyer allowed just one hit in five shutout innings, striking out four and walking two on the way to the win, improving to 2-3 on the season.
North Dakota State closed the gap against the Omaha bullpen before
Nate Moquin struck out Colten Becker with the tying run at third base to secure his fifth save of the season.
In Game 2, the Bison chased starter
Sam Beck with a three-run fifth inning, taking a 5-0 lead on a home run by Kyle Law.
The Mavericks responded in the top of the sixth when
Brody Sexton's ground ball was mishandled with the bases loaded, cutting the Bison lead to 5-1. But Omaha couldn't come up with the big hit the rest of the way, leaving nine runners on base in the loss.
In the doubleheader, Lewis went 5 for 9 at the plate while Dick went 4 for 7. All 20 hits for Omaha on the day were singles.
The Mavericks return to Tal Anderson Field for a non-conference game Wednesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. CT against Creighton.
Omaha resumes Summit League play with a three-game series at home against St. Thomas from April 24-26. Tickets for all Mavericks home games are available at OMavs.com/tickets.
