Women's Basketball Begins California Trip in Malibu

The Mavericks (3-3) continue their four-game road trip this week when they head to California for two games, starting with Pepperdine (2-4) on Thursday at 9 p.m. The game can be heard on 1180 The Zone with Jon Schriner on the call. Links to live stats, audio and video are available on OMavs.com.

  • The Mavericks lost by a razor thin margin on Sunday when Tennessee State scored four-straight free throws in the final six seconds to win 74-72.
  • While both teams traded leads throughout the game, in the end Omaha still bested the Tigers in most categories, shooting 49% (25-for-51) vs. 41.9% (26-for-62) on field goals, 34.8% (8-for-23) vs. 21.4% (3-for-14) on three pointers, 93.3% (14-for-15) vs. 86.4% (19-for-22) on free throws, and 35 vs. 29 in rebounds.
  • For the second time this season, Aaliyah Stanley was the team's leading scorer as she tied her career high with 24 points at TSU. She went 8-for-10 (80%) on field goals, including a perfect 4-for-4 on 3-PT FGs. She now has 75 points (12.5 ppg) on the season.
  • Elena Pilakouta now has double-digit points in all six games this season after adding 14 in Nashville. She remains Omaha's leading scorer with 92 points (15.3 ppg).
  • Grace Cave narrowly missed a double-double against Nashville, finishing with 11 points and a team-high nine total rebounds. She also led the team with four assists. As of right now, Cave is far outpacing her impressive rookie campaign last year with 10.2 ppg (7.4 in 2021-22), 4.7 rpg (2.8 in 2021-22), and 2.7 apg (1.9 in 2021-22). 
  • Newcomers Jaylen Townsend and Ana Nikulochkina each had a three-pointer against TSU, giving them four and six for the year, respectively. Both of them are also tied with 27 points so far.
Scouting the Waves
The Waves went 8-17 last season with a 4-11 conference record. They fell to Loyola Marymount 64-54 in the opening round of the WCC Championships.

Pepperdine started off the week with a 64-55 loss at Cal State Fullerton on Monday. 

Sophomore guard Ally Stedman leads the Waves with 75 points (15.0 ppg). She's shooting 31-for-82 (.378), including 10-for-36 (.278) on three-pointers. Last year she finished with 264 points (11.0 ppg). Sophomore forward Meaali'i Amosa is Pepperdine's top rebounder with 40 boards on the year (6.7 rpg). She also has 40 points (6.7 ppg), including a .667 shooting percentage after going 14-for-21 on field goals. Amosa picked up a double-double last week with 10 points and 14 rebounds against CUI.

Graduate student guard Marly Walls may be Pepperdine's best overall player after transferring from Bucknell. She currently paces the team with 30 assists and 10 steals, while also having 74 points (12.3 ppg) and 31 total rebounds (5.2 rpg). Against La Salle on November 18, she recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 assists and 12 points.

Head Coach Kristen Dowling is in her fourth season with Pepperdine, compiling a 31-54 record.
