Tipping Off
The Omaha women's basketball team will play the third game of its four-game home stand this Saturday at 12 p.m. when they host Peru State in their lone match this season in Sapp Fieldhouse. Quick Hits
- The Mavericks are 2-1 to start the season and are coming of a 91-73 victory over Weber State last Wednesday. Those 91 points were the most the team has scored in a single game since scoring 105 on Western Illinois on February 6, 2021.
- Omaha was incredibly accurate in their last match, shooting 49.2% (30-of-61). The team was even better on free throws, going 25-for-29 (86.2%). Defensively, the mavericks totaled 22 defensive rebounds and forced 21 turnovers, including 10 steals. Conversely, they only gave the ball up 10 times the entire match. As a whole, Omaha scored 26 points on Weber State turnovers.
- Elena Pilakouta was one of five Mavericks to top 10 points on Wednesday, dropping 25, the second most she has ever scored in a single game. With an even 50 points (16.7 ppg), she is currently perfect from the foul line at 8-for-8 and is 21-for-30 (.700) on field goals. Pilakouta has also yet to post less than 10 points in a game this season.
- Morgann Gardner reached double-digit points for the first time in her career this week with 11 vs. Weber State. She went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe and 3-for-5 (.600) on field goals, while also picking up a couple of assists and a rebound.
- In addition to scoring 18 points, Aaliyah Stanley was also the team leader in rebounds (six) and assists (four) Wednesday night. Like Pilakouta and Gardner, she was also flawless on free throws at 4-for-4.
- Polina Nikulochkina took over as the team's steals leader with six after a four-steal performance against Weber State. She also scored six points and had three boards and a dime.
Scouting the Bobcats
The Bobcats went 12-16 with a 7-12 record in the Heart of America conference in the 2021-22 season, falling short of qualifying for the postseason. Last week, Peru State faced Doane University on the road, losing 78-88. The team shot 41.3% (26-for-63), including 36.8% (7-for-19) from three. They also went 19-for-26 (73.1%) on free throws, had 36 rebounds, and nine steals.
Sophomore guard Samantha Stewart is Peru State's leading scoring with 63 points (12.6 ppg) so far. She's currently shooting 43.4% (23-for-53) on field goals and is 17-for-21 (81%) on free throws. Stewart also leads the team with 15 steals and is second in rebounds with 28. Fellow sophomore guard Josiee Sobotka has the most boards on the team with 30, as well as 29 points and a couple of 3-PT FGs.
Maddy Duncan, another sophomore guard, is top of the team in three-pointers at 14-for-38 (36.8%) and second in total points with 57.
Head Coach Ian Holleran is in his first season in charge of the Bobcats. So far Holleran is 3-2 with Peru State, with wins against Central Christian College, the College of Saint Mary, and Haskell Indian Nations University.
All-Time Against Peru State
The Mavericks ware undefeated against Peru State at 11-0 in the all-time series. Their first win was a 91-37 rout back in 1975, while their most recent victory came in 2019 when Omaha won 92-58.
