Women's Basketball Ready for Home Opener vs. Wichita State

The Omaha women's basketball team will play its long-awaited home opener of the 2022-23 season this Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Wichita State in Baxter Arena. The game can be heard on 1180 The Zone with Jon Schriner on the call. Quick Hits 
  • The Mavericks kicked off their 2022-23 season on Monday with a 36-100 loss at Nebraska. The team went 11-for-52 (21.2%) on field goals, as well as 11-for-19 (57.9%) on free throws. Omaha also picked up 29 total rebounds and five steals.
  • Elena Pilakouta led the team on Monday with 10 points on four layups and a pair of free throws. She just missed a double-double with eight total rebounds, and also posted a team-high 25 minutes on the court.
  • Four different newcomers scored their first career points with Omaha earlier this week. The first were Ana Nikulochkina and Polina Nikulochkina, who each sunk one from behind the arc 70 seconds apart from each other in the first quarter. Jaylen Townsend scored her first on a jumper at 2:11 in the third quarter, while Aaliyah Stanley notched her first point on a free throw at 6:22 in the fourth.
  • Freshman Brooklyn Smith was the lone Maverick to make a block on Monday, stopping two shots within a minute of each other starting at 4:17 in the fourth quarter.
  • Akili Felici, in her first game since March 9, 2021, played 14 minutes and recorded a steal and a rebound.
  • Kennedi Grant had the most free throws of anyone on the court on Monday, making three from the foul line.
Scouting the Shockers
The Shockers went 14-16 in 2021-22, ultimately falling 86-88 to Tulsa in the first round of the AAC playoffs. In their 2022-23 season opener, Wichita State topped Alcorn State 67-53 at home. The Shockers went 21-for-53 (39.6%) on field goals, including 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc, while also going 20-for-29  (69%) on free throws.

Junior guard DJ McCarty led the way in their season opener with 17 points, including seven free throws and two 3-PT FGs. She also led the team with four steals. Last season, McCarty totaled 171 points (8.1 ppg) and shot .786 from the charity stripe (33-for-42).

Senior forward Trajata Colbert logged a double-double against Alcorn State with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also went a perfect 7-for-7 on free throws. Now in her fifth season with the team, Colbert owns 549 points in her career (6.5 ppg), including a career-best 215 points last season. Sophomore guard Nhug Bosch Duran led the Shockers with five assists on Wednesday, along with five rebounds and a blocked shot. In her rookie season, she posted 29 assists.

Head coach Keitha Adams is in her sixth season in charge of the Shockers. Adams is 63-78 with Wichita State and owns a 426-263 in her 22-year career.

All-Time Against Wichita State
The Mavericks won their one and only game with Wichita State all the way back on November 24, 1978. Omaha topped the Shockers 90-68 that day.
