Former Maverick Guentzel on Sensational Run with Penguins

Jan 7, 2022

While it hasn't received the attention of the playoff run in his rookie season, Jake Guentzel is on a tear.

The former Omaha captain and current Pittsburgh winger scored two goals at Philadelphia Thursday to run his string of consecutive appearances with at least one point to 16 games – the longest stretch by a Penguins player in a decade. He's tallied 24 points (14 goals and 10 assists) since it began on Nov. 13.

Officially, Guentzel's scoring streak ended at 13 games when he was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 6. He rejoined the Pittsburgh lineup last week and picked up where he left off a month ago. The sixth-year forward has recorded three consecutive two-point nights since returning against San Jose on Jan. 2.

At the time of his injury in December, Guentzel had a team-leading 15 goals and 27 points through 24 games. Playing alongside NHL superstar Sydney Crosby and Bryan Rust, he's tallied at least one point in each of his 13 road contests, which is a Pittsburgh franchise record to open a season. Guentzel has netted 13 goals – and leads the entire NHL with a 1.00 goals-per-game average – in those away outings.

Through 27 games, the Omaha-born and Minnesota-raised winger is tied for 11th in the league with 18 goals and has 33 total points. Guentzel is trending toward a career-best year. He amassed 76 points in 82 games in 2018-19, his third year in the NHL. He's averaged better than a point per game since then.

Guentzel left Omaha after his junior season to sign with the Penguins. He still ranks seventh on the all-time scoring chart for the Mavericks with 119 points. As a sophomore, Guentzel helped Omaha reach the 2015 Frozen Four and scored their lone goal in the national semifinal. He was a team captain during his final season, guiding the Mavericks to a 6-0 start that garnered the No. 1 ranking in one national poll.

The following November, Guentzel made his NHL debut and scored his first goal on his first shot of his first shift with the Penguins. He added a second one on his second shift. And by the end of that season, he was Crosby's wingman for a run to the Stanley Cup championship. Guentzel tied the NHL record for postseason points by a rookie with 21, scoring eight goals in his first nine games. The only others with eight or more goals in their first nine postseason games in NHL history were Maurice Richard, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. Five of Guentzel's 13 playoff goals were game-winners, two in the Finals.

In his next postseason, he recorded a four-goal game in a win over Philadelphia. And during the 2019-20 campaign, he was voted to play in the NHL All-Star Game, although he missed the event due to an injury.

Guentzel will undoubtedly get that opportunity again, perhaps sooner rather than later. He can match the 2011-12 point run of 17 games by Pascal Dupuis in Pittsburgh's game at Dallas Saturday afternoon. Guentzel has posted five consecutive multi-point games, a stretch that includes his fourth career hat trick and third four-point effort at Vancouver on Dec. 4. He tallied two goals and an assist against the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 6 before leaving with the injury that put him out of action until last Sunday.
