Former Maverick Olofsson Named to Sweden's Olympic Team

Jan 21, 2022

There are now three former Maverick hockey players headed to the Olympics.

Forward Fredrik Olofsson, who played for Omaha from 2015-19 and served as an assistant captain during his senior season, will represent Sweden in the upcoming Winter Games in Beijing, China.

The former Maverick was born in Sweden but grew in Colorado. He appeared in 137 games during his collegiate career and finished with 35 goals and 95 points, a total that ranks 21st in program history.

Olofsson arrived on the heels of Omaha's appearance in the 2015 Frozen Four and made an immediate impact in his first season under former coach Dean Blais. He played for current Maverick coach Mike Gabinet for the remainder of his career, scoring a career-high 34 points during his final season.

"Obviously, Freddy's always been a tremendous hockey player, but he's a tremendous individual as well," Gabinet said. "I couldn't be more excited for Freddy to see his on-ice success – to get to one of the highest levels where he gets to represent his country at the Olympics."

Olofsson is currently playing for IK Oskarshamn in the Swedish Hockey League. He's teammates in Sweden with fellow Omaha alum Brian Cooper, who will be playing for the U.S. at the Olympic Games.

The announcement of the Swedish roster came only days after Cooper and former Omaha reserve goaltender Matej Tomek were named to the American and Slovakian Olympic teams, respectively.

"It's great, individually, for those guys and their success and, collectively, for our program," Gabinet said. "To have players are alumni playing in the Olympics, it's a pretty special feeling."
