Omaha Set To Host South Dakota State and South Dakota

The Omaha women's basketball team is set to host two home games at Baxter Arena this weekend. They'll take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. and the South Dakota Coyotes on Saturday Jan. 15 with tip-off set for 1 p.m.

Quick Hits

Mariah Murdie scored a career-high 25 points in the Mavericks 73-64 loss to Kansas City Monday night, it was the second straight game a Maverick set a 25 point career-high after Grace Cave scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Mavericks in their 68-54 win over North Dakota State, Jan. 8.

Josie Filer hauled in 10 rebounds against the Roos Monday night, she's recorded double-digit rebounding efforts in three of her six games this season and eclipsed 500 career rebounds against Kansas City.

• Murdie also reached 500 career rebounds against the Roos, she's currently seventh in The Summit League in rebounding and fifth in blocks.

• Cave played a career-high 40 minutes in the win over NDSU, she's played in at least 37 minutes in each of  the Mavericks last three games.

• Two other Mavericks joined Cave in double digits against North Dakota State, including Sam Mitchell, who drained three buckets from deep on her way to 16 points and Josie Filer, who chipped in 10 points and five boards.

• Omaha shot a season-best 51.0 (26-51) percent from the field against North Dakota State.

• Seniors Josie Filer and Sophie Johnston made their season debut's against St. Thomas on Dec. 20 after missing the first nine games due to injury. Filer scored nine points and hauled in 10 rebounds against Western Illinois on Dec. 22 in 27 minutes of action.

• Omaha was tabbed eighth in the Summit League Preseason Poll. The Mavericks finished last season 7-13 overall with a 4-8 league finish. They earned the eighth seed in the Summit League Tournament last spring and  advanced to the Championship game before falling to South Dakota.


Scouting the South Dakota State Jackrabbits

• South Dakota State moved to 8-8 on the season and 4-1 in the Summit League with a 65-42 loss at South Dakota last weekend. They are led in scoring by freshman Paige Meyer who is averaging 10.7 points-per-game to go along with her team-best 3.9 assists-per-game.

• Head coach Aaron Johnston is in his 22nd season in charge of the Jackrabbits, with a 521-178 record during his tenor.


All-Time Against South Dakota State

South Dakota State leads the all-time series 47-31. Omaha won  the last matchup between the 52-40 in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals on March 6, 2021 in Sioux Falls, SD.


Scouting the South Dakota Coyotes

• South Dakota is 12-4 on the season and moved to 5-0 in the Summit League with a 65-42 win vs South Dakota State last weekend. They are led in scoring by Chloe Lamb who is averaging 15.9 points-per-game. Hannah Sjerven and Liv Korngable also average double-digit point totals while leading the team in rebounding (7.4 RPG) and assists (3.4 APG) respectively.

• Head coach Dawn Plitzuweit is in her sixth season in charge of the Coyotes. She is 141-34 at South Dakota and 329-127 in her career.


All-Time Against South Dakota

South Dakota leads the all-time series between the two teams 49-35. South Dakota won the last meeting 66-43 on March 9, 2021 in Sioux Falls, SD in the Summit League Tournament Championship.
