GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Omaha women's tennis team won its season opener Friday night, defeating Green Bay 5-2 at Western Racquet Club. The Mavericks are now 1-0 on the season (0-0 Summit League).
Omaha started the match by taking two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The pair of junior Michelle Lo and sophomore Kylie Boyer claimed their match 6-1 from the No. 1 position against Olivia Headford and Jule-Sophie Hermann, while freshmen Rylee Tucker and Emily Behling tallied their first collegiate victory from the No. 2 slot, 6-2 over Samm Pedersen and Maria Neff.
The Mavericks then powered through four of the six singles matches to seal the win. Lo by topped Headford, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, and sophomore Janelle Wilson picked up another win in the No. 2 position by taking down Hermann, 6-4, 6-2. Boyer, competing in the No. 4 slot, defeated Tallie Piaskowski by a score of 6-1 ,6-3, and senior Kenzie Hill picked up the Mavericks' fourth victory of the night, 6-2, 6-4 over Pedersen at No. 6.
"Our team played extremely well for its first win of the season, and I'm really proud of the fight and energy we showed," head coach Adam Summitt said. "We came out strong on doubles and had four quick starts in singles."
Omaha makes the second stop of its weekend road trip this Sunday, Jan. 22, visiting Northern Iowa at 10 a.m.
