Box Score FARGO, N.D. -- Behind a complete-game gem from senior right-hander
Tyler Fox, the Omaha baseball team topped North Dakota State 6-0 Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 23-21 (13-9 Summit League), while the Bison drop to 25-20 (9-13 Summit League).
Fox (9-2) shut out NDSU with a five-hitter, allowing no walks with three strikeouts. The victory was his league-leading ninth of the season and the 29th of his career, which ties him with former Maverick Kyle Funk (2000-03) for UNO's all-time career wins record.
Blake Stockert (2-4) took the loss for NDSU, allowing five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Senior
Clayton Taylor led the Mavericks at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI, helped by his league-leading 10th home run of the season.
Seniors
Cole Gruber (2-for-5, one run) and
Alex Schultz (2-for-5, one run), junior
Sam Palensky (2-for-4, one RBI) and sophomore
Ryan Cate (2-for-4, one run) also had multi-hit performances.
The Mavericks opened it up the top of the second inning, scratching out two runs on three hits and an error. Cate and sophomore
Adam Caniglia each singled to put two runners on with no outs for Palensky, who got on with a bunt single and advanced on a Bison throwing error, which allowed Cate to score. Freshman
Jack Kalina then worked through a 10-pitch at-bat, coming through with a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Caniglia to make it 2-0.
Omaha added another trio of runs with four hits in the fifth. Gruber led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Taylor followed with his two-run shot to right for a 4-0 lead. Schultz and Cate then added consecutive singles, and both moved into scoring position on a passed ball. After Caniglia drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, NDSU brought in Colin Baumgard to relieve Stockert on the bump. Palensky promptly reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Schultz to score for a 5-0 advantage.
UNO put up one final run in the ninth, courtesy of two hits and an error. Freshman
Riley Herold led off with a single to right, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and went to third on a Gruber groundout. Taylor then doubled down the right field line to drive in Herold, pushing the Mavericks' lead to 6-0.
Omaha and North Dakota State resume their series on Saturday, May 7, with first pitch at 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D. Links to live video and stats will be available on OMavs.com.
