Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team saw its early lead erased Tuesday afternoon, as Creighton rallied past the Mavericks, 2-1 at TD Ameritrade Park. The Mavericks are now 26-25 on the season, while the Bluejays improve to 34-13.
CU starter Austin Groth (1-0) earned the win, limiting UNO to one unearned run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Junior right-hander
Brett Sasse (2-4) took the loss, surrendering two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.0 innings. Ethan DeCaster collected his second save of the year, tossing 2.1 hitless, shutout innings with a walk and a strikeout.
Senior
Cole Gruber finished 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and a run scored.
Creighton was led by a pair of 2-for-3 performances from Nicky Lopez and Matt Gandy, with Gandy adding a run scored.
Omaha jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gruber got on with a four-pitch walk, then stole a pair of bases and scored on an errant throw for a one-run advantage.
The Bluejays left two runners on in both the first and third innings, and UNO's lead held until the bottom of the fourth. Three straight singles by Brett Murray, Gandy and Kevin Connolly then loaded the bases with no outs for Bryce Only, who connected for a game-tying RBI single to left. After junior left-hander
Colton Adams came in to relieve Sasse, Michael Emodi grounded into a double play, which allowed Gandy to cross and put Creighton ahead 2-1.
Though Adams and junior right-hander
Eric Moreno combined to keep the Jays from scoring over the remaining 4.0 innings, UNO was held scoreless as well, unable to get a runner past second.
Omaha closes the regular season May 19-21, hosting Oral Roberts for a three-game Summit League series at the Ballpark at Boys Town. First pitch all three days is set for 1 p.m., and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
