Omaha Suffers Setback to Nebraska, 11-6

Box Score PAPILLION, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team played its first Werner Park game of the season Wednesday night, falling 11-6 to in-state foe Nebraska. The Mavericks dropped to 15-14 on the season, while the Huskers improved to 20-9.

NU reliever Derek Burkamper (3-1) earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Junior right-hander Shane Meltz (0-2) took the loss, giving up four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 3.2 innings of work.

As a team, Omaha finished with 10 hits for its 15th double-digit hit performance this season. Nebraska scored in seven straight innings from the third through ninth frames and had every player in the lineup register at least one hit en route to 14 hits as a team.

Senior Alex Schultz led the way for Omaha with a 2-for-4 day, doubling, scoring once and driving in two more runs. Junior Sam Palensky was also 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, and senior Cole Gruber finished 1-for-4 with his first home run of the season.

NU was paced by Ben Miller's 3-for-6 night with a run scored. Angelo Altavilla (2-for-3, one run, two RBI), Jake Meyers (2-for-4, three runs, one RBI) and Scott Schreiber (2-for-6, one run) also had multi-hit performances.

Omaha struck first when Gruber blasted a solo homer to right in the bottom of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead.

Nebraska took the lead in the third, plating two runs on three hits. Jake Placzek and Schreiber each singled before a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. Placzek then scored on a passed ball, and Schreiber came in on a single down the right field line by Meyers to make it 2-1.

In the third, Omaha stalled the game in a 2-2 tie. Schultz led off with a four-pitch walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Gruber and scored with senior Clayton Taylor's RBI single to right.

Nebraska came back for two runs on two hits and an error in the fourth, surging ahead by two. Altavilla singled to left and Ryan Boldt doubled down the right field line to put two on for Placzek, who delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Altavilla. A Maverick fielding error then allowed Boldt to score for a 4-2 tally.

The Mavericks then cut into NU's lead in the fourth when Palensky, who led off with a single to left center, eventually scored with Schultz's RBI single up the middle to make it 4-3.

The Huskers, however, put up two more runs of their own in the fifth. Meyers and Taylor Fish both singled, and Steven Reveles was hit by a pitch, to load the bases for NU. Following a pitching change, Altavilla worked a four-pitch walk to score Meyers, and Fish later scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 6-3.

Omaha responded again in the bottom half of the inning, as Taylor drew a leadoff walk in four pitches, stole second and came in on Palensky's RBI single up the middle for a 6-4 score.

In the sixth, Nebraska posted another run when Meyers reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored as Luis Alvarado struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch. The Huskers again added to their lead in the seventh, with Reveles doubling down the right field line, stealing third and scoring on a passed ball to stretch it to 8-4.

UNO managed another run in the seventh, when Taylor scored via Palensky's RBI groundout that cut it to 8-5. Nebraska, though, added to their lead in the eighth, using two hits to score twice. With the bases loaded, Reveles grounded into a double play, allowing Meyers to score, before Alvarado scored courtesy of an RBI single up the middle by Altavilla that made it 10-5.

In the eighth, freshman Jack Kalina delivered a single to center in his first at-bat of the night. Schultz followed with an RBI double to the right-center gap to plate Kalina, trimming NU's lead to 10-6. The Huskers, however, added one last run in the ninth. Ben Miller, who got on with a double down the right field line, scored when Fish was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, pushing the final score to 11-6.

Omaha resumes Summit League play this weekend, visiting South Dakota State for a three-game road series. The Mavericks open the weekend on Friday, April 8, with first pitch at 3 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
