Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team capped its weekend series with Western Illinois Sunday afternoon, falling 10-2 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks are now 15-13 (6-3 Summit League), while the Leathernecks improve to 8-17 (6-3 Summit League).
Ian Koch (1-3) earned the win, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work. The loss went to sophomore right-hander
Corey Binger (4-1), who allowed four runs on four hits and four walks over 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Freshman
Grant Suponchick (2-for-4) and sophomore
Adam Caniglia (2-for-5) each had multi-hit efforts for the day for Omaha.
Down 3-0 after Western Illinois plated three runs on one hit in the top of the second, Omaha came back for a run on two hits in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore
Ryan Cate drew a one-out walk and later advanced to third with Suponchick's single up the middle. Junior
Sam Palensky then singled through the right side to drive in Cate for the Mavericks' first run for a 3-1 score.
The Leathernecks added another run with three hits and an error in the third. Once again, the Mavericks responded in the bottom half of the inning, this time capitalizing on two Leatherneck errors. Gruber started it off, working a one-out walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Caniglia reached on a fielding miscue, allowing Gruber to score for a 4-2 tally.
It was ultimately Omaha's final run of the game, however, as Western Illinois went on to scratch across a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three more in the seventh. The Leathernecks finished with 14 hits in the game en route to the 10-2 decision.
