OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis won its first Summit League match of the season Tuesday, defeating South Dakota 4-3 at Koch Tennis Center. The Mavericks are now .500 on the season with a 10-10 (1-2 Summit League) record.
Omaha took two out of the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point to start the contest. At No. 1, the pair of sophomore Michelle Lo and junior Hylan Miller improved to 9-3 in doubles on the season with a victory over the team of Ellie Burns/Emma Kranendonk, 6-1. Omaha secured the point when the team of senior Molly Matricardi and freshman Kylie Boyer won at the No. 2 position, 7-6.
UNO and USD split the singles matches at three apiece to give Omaha the 4-3 match victory. Matricardi picked up victory over Kranendonk, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. At No. 4, freshman Janelle Wilson notched her team-leading eighth singles win of the season by defeating Milica Pavlovic, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Kylie Boyer also won a nail-biter at No. 5 Elise van Zijst, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
“We played really well today. It was a total team effort,” head coach Mike Saniuk said. “Doubles was tight, singles was tight. The girls really stepped up. Hylan (Miller) and Michelle (Lo) led the way in doubles. Molly (Matricardi) and Kylie (Boyer) clinched it for us in a huge win! Molly (Matricardi), Janelle (Wilson), and Kylie (Boyer) really stepped up in singles. We took a huge step forward beating USD. They are a very good team.”
Omaha returns to action on Thursday, April 21 for a conference matchup against IUPUI at 10 a.m. at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center.
