Box Score 2 BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha baseball team's offense came through in a big way Saturday, as UNO swept a doubleheader at South Dakota State, 19-6 and 10-3, at Erv Huether Field. With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 17-14 (8-3 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits dropped to 9-20 (5-6 Summit League).
GAME 1 -- OMAHA 19, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 6Omaha keyed a season-high 22 hits in the opening game en route to a season-best 19 runs. Six Mavericks had multi-hit games: freshman
Grant Suponchick (5-for-6, four runs, one RBI), sophomore
Adam Caniglia (4-for-4, four runs, one RBI), freshman
Jack Kalina (3-for-5, two runs, seven RBI), junior
Sam Palensky (3-for-6, three runs, one RBI) and sophomore
Ryan Cate (2-for-5, one run, two RBI).
Kalina was one of four UNO players to homer in the game, as he belted a grand slam in the ninth for his first career roundtripper – and the second grand slam by a Maverick this season. Kalina's seven RBI were also the most of any Omaha player in the five-year Division I era and the most runs driven in in a single game since
Colby McCord had six RBI at Fort Hays State on April 22, 2011.
Junior right-hander
Brett Sasse (2-3) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs, six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over the final 4.0 innings. Andrew Clemen (2-5) took the loss, giving up six runs on 11 hits and two walks with four strikeouts over his 6.2-inning start.
The Mavericks got on the board first in the top of the third, courtesy of a solo homer to left by Caniglia -- the first homer of his career -- which made it 1-0 UNO.
SDSU then came back for three runs on three hits and an error in the third, going ahead 3-1. Omaha used three hits to get a run back in the fourth, as Palensky led off with a double to left and freshman
Riley Herold singled to right to put two runners aboard. Kalina then drove in his first run of the day with a single to left center, plating Palensky to cut the score to 3-2.
In the fifth, South Dakota State added another run with three hits, with Anthony Schneider's groundout allowing Luke Ringhofer to score for a 4-2 Jackrabbit lead. The Mavericks chipped away at the deficit again in the sixth, when Suponchick led off with a double to left center and later scored on an RBI groundout to make it 4-3.
Omaha's scoring surge then started in the seventh, when the Mavericks tallied six runs, all with two outs. Caniglia got on with a one-out single up the middle, and two batters later, Palensky put a two-out single through the left side. Suponchick then singled to center to score Caniglia, and following an SDSU pitching change, Herold drew a walk to load the bases. Kalina followed with another walk to score Palensky, and senior
Alex Schultz came up big after that with a bases-clearing double to center. Senior
Cole Gruber added an RBI single to left center to drive in Schultz for the last run of the inning, putting the Mavericks up 9-4.
South Dakota State managed a run in the bottom half of the inning, when Matt Johnson doubled to left to lead off and scored on Cody Sharrow's RBI single through the left side that pushed the score to 9-5.
Omaha added four more runs on four hits and an error in the eighth. Caniglia opened the inning with a walk, and Cate followed promptly with a two-run homer to left. Suponchick later singled to center, and Herold added a single and advanced to third on a fielding error, with Suponchick scoring on the play. Herold then came in on a wild pitch, extending UNO's lead to 13-5.
The Mavericks still had more offensive output left in the tank, as they scored another six runs on five hits in the ninth. Senior
Clayton Taylor led off the inning with a solo homer to left. Caniglia followed with a double to left and later scored on Palensky's RBI single to center. A Suponchick single to left center and another Herold walk loaded the bases for Kalina, who bashed his grand slam to left to give Omaha a massive 19-5 advantage.
The Jackrabbits then tallied one last run in the ninth, bringing the final score to 19-6.
GAME 2 -- OMAHA 10, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 3The offensive outburst continued in the second game, with Omaha putting up 10 runs on 12 hits. Three Mavericks had multi-hit efforts: Cate (3-for-5, two runs, three RBI), Schultz (2-for-4, three runs) and Gruber (2-for-4, one run, one RBI).
Junior left-hander
Colton Adams (1-0) got the win in relief, limiting the Jackrabbits to four hits over 3.0 shutout innings with one walk and one strikeout. Ethan Kenkel (0-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in 1.1 innings of work.
Omaha's firepower carried over from game one, as the Mavericks put up four runs on four hits and two errors in the top of the first. Schultz walked and Taylor singled through the right side to put two runners on, followed by an RBI single to right center by Cate to drive in Schultz. Palensky added an RBI single to left that plated Taylor, and he and Cate both later scored courtesy of a Herold single to short and an error on the play for a quick 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks added three runs on four hits to their advantage in the second inning. Schultz opened the inning with a triple to right and scored immediately with Gruber's RBI single to second. Gruber then stole second and third and was driven in with Taylor's sacrifice fly to left. Caniglia added a single to left, and following an SDSU pitching change, scored on Cate's RBI single to right for a 7-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits put up their first run of the game in the third, when Johnson's sacrifice fly allowed Nick Smith to score for a 7-1 tally.
In the fourth, Cate smashed a solo homer to left to lead off the inning. Suponchick and Herold later drew consecutive walks to put two runners on, and freshman
Josh Scribner came through with an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Suponchick and extending the Mavericks' lead to 9-1.
In the fifth, SDSU came back for two runs, as Jesse Munstermann delivered a two-run homer to left center that trimmed the score to 9-3.
The Mavericks were held scoreless from the fifth through the eighth innings but put up one last run in the top of the ninth. Schultz led off the inning with a single to short, advanced to second on a bunt single by Gruber and later scored on Taylor's RBI groundout, bringing the final score to 10-3.
