FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore pitcher Abbie Clanton threw a no-hitter as Omaha swept host Northern Colorado 8-1 and 9-0 in nonconference play Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks improve to 8-13 overall, while the Rams are now 3-13.
Game One: Omaha 8 Northern Colorado 1
Northern Colorado opened the scoring with a run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Omaha responded with four runs in the top of the sixth. Sydney Hames doubled to left center and moved to third on a ground out. Lizzie Noble walked and moved to second on Kourtney Pock's infield hit. A Megan May single to center allowed Hames to score. Tara Trede's single brought home Pock and Noble. Following a Northern Colorado pitching change, Nicole Warren drove in May to the Mavericks a 4-1 lead.
UNO put four more runs on the board in the top of the seventh. Hames and Bailey Schulenberg each reached to open the inning. Noble cleared the bases with a triple to left field. Pock roped a double to left field allowing Noble to score. Trede doubled to left field to plate Pock and make the final score 8-1.
Freshman Laura Roecker pitched a complete game allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Rocker improved to 4-6 on the year.
Hames went 2-dor-2 at the plate with a double and two walks. Pock went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Noble was 2-for-3 at the dish with a triple and two RBI. Trede had a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with a double and three RBI.
Game Two: Omaha 9 Northern Colorado 0 (6 innings)
Clanton pitched a no hitter in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader and improved to 2-4 on the season.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth. May reached on an error to start the inning. Kylie Schwarting pinch ran for May and moved to second on Trede's sacrifice bunt. Warren hit an inside the park homerun to put Omaha up 2-0.
The Mavericks put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning. Schulenberg doubled to center to bring home Hames. Pock singled to left and moved to second as Schulenberg was thrown out at home. May smacked a double to center field allowing Pock to score. Trede reached on the Rams second error of the season. Lia Mancuso doubled to bring May around to score. Warren hit a two run single to put Omaha up 7-1. Hames hit a two-out double to score Warren and Kelly Pattison to make the final 9-0.
Warren had a pair of hits including an inside the park home run and two RBI. Noble and Pock each had two hits. Hames had a double and two RBI. Schulenberg, Noble, Mancuso, and May each had RBIs.
Omaha returns to action this weekend at the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The Mavericks open tournament play on Friday with a 9 a.m. game against Northern Iowa and a 4:30 p.m. matchup against Missouri State.
