Softball Drops Two at Colorado State Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Omaha softball team dropped two games on day one of the Colorado State Classic Saturday afternoon.  The Mavericks were defeated by Idaho State in the opener 4-2 and then lost an 11-3 decision to Colorado State in five innings.

The Mavericks are now 6-11 overall and will return to action on Sunday against the same two teams.  First pitch against Idaho State is set for 10 a.m. (CT), while the second game of the day is set to start at 3 p.m. (CT) against Colorado State.

Game One: Idaho State 4 Omaha 2

Idaho State took advantage of a single to start the game to take an early 1-0 lead.  Maverick starter Lizzie Noble settled down and kept the Bengals off the scoreboard in the second and third innings.

Nicole Warren tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with a one-out solo home run to right field.  Omaha put two more runners on base, but were unable to bring them around to score.

ISU responded with a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Campbell Ditto got things going in the bottom of the sixth with an infield single, but was forced out at second on Bailey Schulenberg's fielder's choice.  Megan May reached on an error that allowed Schulenberg to advance to third.  Tara Trede singled to right field to score Schulenberg and move May to third.  Omaha was unable to do any more damage to Idaho State starter Ashlyn Ames.

Ditto led the Mavericks with a pair of singles, while Trede and Warren each had an RBI.

Noble allowed three runs on seven hits and gave up four walks in the loss.  Abbie Clanton pitched the final three innings allowing one run on three hits, while striking out one.

Game Two: Colorado State 11 Omaha 3 (5 innings)

Colorado State took an early lead and never looked back as it defeated Omaha in five innings, 11-3.

The Rams plated three runs in the bottom of the first.  The Mavericks responded with a two-out solo home run by Lizzie Noble in the second.

CSU put six on the board in the bottom of the second to stretch its lead to 9-1.

The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth.  Nicole Warren reached base with a one out single.  Sydney Hames cleared the base paths with a two-run homer to right field to make the score 9-3.

The Rams would push two more across in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the run rule, 11-3.

Hames had two of the six hits for Omaha, including a double and a home run.  Noble added a homer, while Ditto, Warren, and Megan May each had singles.

Laura Roecker started for the Mavericks and pitched 1.2 innings allowing nine runs on four hits and five walks.  Rocker is now 3-5 on the season.  Abbie Clanton pitched the final three innings in relief allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
