Softball Sweeps on Day Two of Jayhawk Invite

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Omaha softball team defeated Missouri State 15-4 in five innings and UMKC 4-3 on day two of the Jayhawk Invitational Saturday evening.  The Mavericks (11-14 overall) will conclude the weekend against tournament host Kansas at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.

GAME ONE: Omaha 15 Missouri State 4 (5 innings)

Omaha's offense came alive in its first game on Saturday afternoon with 15 hits including four home runs.

Nicole Warren hit the first pitch of the game over the left field wall to give Omaha a 1-0 lead.

Abbie Clanton did not allow a hit to the Bears batters through the first three innings.

The Mavericks exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth.  Campbell Ditto was hit by a pitch to open the inning.  Singles by Lizzie Noble and Kourtney Pock loaded the bases.  Megan May drew a one out walk to score Ditto.  Tara Trede doubled down the left field line to score two more.  Alexis Parker singled to right scoring Trede and May.  Warren and Sydney Hames reached on back-to-back infield hits to load the bases for the second time in the inning.  Noble doubled down the left field line to make the score 8-0.

Missouri State made a game of it in the bottom of the inning as the Bears plated four runs on three hits to make the score 8-4 after four.

Omaha put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth with seven more runs.  Kelly Pattison walked and scored on May's first home run of the season.  Warren singled and came home on Hames sixth homer of the season. Pock belted a three-run shot to make the final 15-4.

Hames and Warren each went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run.  Hames scored three runs and had an RBI.  Warren scored two runs with two RBI.  Noble went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.  Pock went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.  May went 1-for-2 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI.

Abbie Clanton started and picked up her fourth win of the season.  Clanton pitched three innings giving up giving up four runs on three hits with a strike out.  Roecker pitched the final two innings allowing no runs.

GAME TWO: Omaha 4 UMKC 3

Omaha rallied from a 2-1 deficit to top UMKC 4-3 on Saturday evening.

The Mavericks took the lead in the bottom of the second.  Kourtney Pock singled to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Megan May singled down the left field line to score Pock.  Omaha loaded the bases, but were unable to add additional runs.

UMKC took the lead in the top of the third with two runs on two hits.

UNO tied things up in the bottom of the inning when Lizzie Noble scored on a wild pitch.

Campbell Ditto led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to center field to give the Mavs the lead 3-2.

The lead did not last long as UMKC tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth.

Ditto opened the bottom of the seventh with an infield single.  She then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  Pock singled to center on a 2-2 pitch to bring Ditto home and give Omaha the win, 4-3.

Ditto and Pock each had two hits in game two for the Mavericks.  Ditto went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scores, a stolen base, and an RBI.  Pock was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  May was 1-for-1 with two walks and an RBI.  Kelly Pattison was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

Roecker improved to 6-6 on the season with a complete game.  She allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out a career high seven.
