LINCOLN, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team fell to in-state foe Nebraska Saturday afternoon, 4-0. The loss drops the Mavericks to 5-7 (0-1 Summit League) on the season.
In doubles, Nebraska took two out of the three matches, but Omaha wouldn't go away easily. The doubles team of juniors Kenzie Hill and Allison Johnson defeated the pair of Mackenna Maddox-Herr/Elizabeth Gould at No. 3, 6-2. The Huskers clinched the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 by identical scores of 6-3.
“We played very well in doubles today,” head coach Mike Saniuk said. “Kenzie (Hill) and Allison (Johnson) played very sound, aggressive doubles at the three spot. They really took it to their opponents. We were points away from the other matches as well. It was a great doubles showing.”
Nebraska sealed the match by sweeping singles play. At No. 4, freshman Janelle Wilson fell to Vasanti Shinde, 6-2, 6-0. Hill was defeated by Katerina Matysova at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 6, junior Rebecca Stafford lost to Maddox-Herr, 6-2, 6-2. The three remaining singles matches went unfinished.
“Overall, I am happy with our dual today,” Saniuk said. “We proved that we have gotten better. We will keep getting better. Nebraska's a very good team, and there's a reason they are nationally ranked.”
Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, March 22, traveling south to take on Alcorn State in Vicksburg, Miss.
