OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha senior men's basketball player
Kyler Erickson was one of 10 student-athletes named to the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works Team, it was announced Tuesday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Allstate Insurance Company.
In its fourth year, the prestigious Allstate NABC Good Works Team honors a distinguished group of college basketball student-athletes who have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through giving back to their communities. The team comprises 10 student-athletes; five from NCAA Division I and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA.
In early December 2015, Erickson was announced as one of 154 nominees from the NABC, in addition to 103 nominees from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The 257 nominations were narrowed down to the final team rosters by voting panels led by former Duke student-athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill and 10-time WNBA All-Star and former Tennessee student-athlete Tamika Catchings. The voting panels include former coaches, esteemed college basketball athletes and media members.
As a senior at Millard South High School, Erickson witnessed a shooting in his school's administration office on Jan. 5, 2011. Nearly a year and a half later, he suffered the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and since undergoing successful treatment, he has become a vocal advocate encouraging others to seek assistance for mental health issues. Erickson runs a website, KylerErickson.com, that details his story, and his videos have garnered widespread attention with over 120,000 views in 114 countries. Erickson's message of "turning tragedy into testimony" encourages people in all walks of life to confront mental health challenges they may be facing.
Erickson has served as a speaker, member and volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and spoken to over 20 elementary, middle and high schools in Omaha and San Diego. He also starred in an episode of "The Harbor TV," a hope-filled homeroom program for high schools across the country and has mentored several mentally ill students and residents in the Omaha area.
Erickson has volunteered for Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska by assisting with apartment setup for refugees moving to the United States and spent a week visiting an orphanage in Ensenada, Mexico, where he cooked, cleaned, spent time with local youth and assisted in building a house for a family in need. Additionally, he has volunteered his time at the Boys and Girls Club, Omaha's Florence Home and Mary Our Queen School's annual Mustang March. On campus, Erickson serves as a member of the UNO Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team will be invited by Allstate to be recognized at the 2016 NCAA Men's Final Four and the 2016 NABC Convention and will participate in a community service project to benefit the host city of Houston. Allstate is an official corporate partner of the NABC, WBCA and NCAA.
