Omaha Records First Win, 5-2 Over UND

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Omaha women's tennis team split its two matches Saturday, notching its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over North Dakota before falling 4-0 to Iowa State.

OMAHA 5, NORTH DAKOTA 2
Omaha's No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams earned wins against the Fighting Hawks. The No. 1 duo of sophomore Michelle Lo and junior Hylan Miller shut out Mimi Yunker and Lacey Sprinkel, 6-0. Freshman Janelle Wilson and junior Kenzie Hill teamed up at No. 3, defeating Aliza Deming and Courtney Brackin, 6-1.

The Mavericks took four out of six singles matches to seal the win. At No. 2, Miller came back to defeat Faith Lee, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. At No. 4, freshman Kylie Boyer won a back-and-forth match against Preethi Kasilingam, triumphing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Wilson and Hill each won their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, by scores of 6-4, 6-3.

"Singles was a grudge match today,” head coach Mike Saniuk said. “Overall we were able to play through the ups and downs. Kylie (Boyer) and Hylan (Miller) really stepped up and pulled out two very tough matches."

IOWA STATE 4, OMAHA 0
Omaha's second match of the day came against Iowa State, which took a 4-0 decision.

Miller competed at No. 1 singles and had the lead, but the match went unfinished. At No. 3 singles, Boyer gave Anna Kuuttila all she could handle, but ultimately dropped the first set 7-5 before the match was called.

“This was a very positive weekend of tennis for our team,” Saniuk said. “We're really starting to come together as a team, as players and a program. Our focus is on our next match against Wisconsin- Green Bay."

The Mavericks return home next weekend for three matches on Friday, Feb. 5. Omaha hosts on Green Bay at 9:30 a.m., Hastings College at 1 p.m., and Doane College at 5 p.m., all at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center.
