DES MOINES, Iowa – The Omaha women's tennis team played its best tennis of the young season, but fell 4-0 to Drake at Knapp Tennis Center Friday evening. The Mavericks are now 0-2 on the season.
The match started with Drake sweeping the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. At No. 2, senior
Molly Matricardi and junior
Kenzie Hill were defeated by Summer Brills and Maddie Johnson, 6-2. At No. 3, freshman
Janelle Wilson and junior
Allison Johnson lost to Joely Lomas and Mela Jaglarz, 6-1. The No. 1 match went unfinished, but sophomore
Michelle Lo and junior
Hylan Miller led Tess Herder and Mariel Ante 5-2 at its conclusion.
In singles action, the Mavericks did not go down without a fight. Omaha went into the third set in four of the six matches.
No. 4 singles were first up with Tess Herder defeating Hill, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 3 slot, a back-and-forth battle ensued between Wilson and Maddie Johnson with each winning a set 6-0 before Johnson took the third set 3-2.
Freshman
Hannah Hills went three sets with Jaglarz, who ultimately won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The No. 1 and No. 2 matches went unfinished, but Miller and Matricardi led in their third sets when the contest was called.
“We competed really well this afternoon," head coach
Mike Saniuk said. "We went into a third set with five of the singles matches. We played with confidence and energy. It was amazing to see. We will now focus on North Dakota and keep moving forward."
The Mavs have a quick turnaround with two matches on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Des Moines. They take on North Dakota at 9:30 a.m. and Iowa State at 1 p.m.
