WoMen's Basketball Returns Home to Face Denver

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Baxter Arena on Sunday, Jan. 17 as they host Denver.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.  Jon Green will have the radio call on Zone 2 1180 AM, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.

The Mavericks are looking to stop a three-game Summit League losing skid, while the Pioneers are looking to remain hot.  During UNO's three-game skid, the Mavericks dropped games to the top three teams in the conference standings (South Dakota State, South Dakota, and IUPUI).  DU has won two of its last three games.  Denver topped Fort Wayne and North Dakota State before losing to Western Illinois on Friday night.

  • Omaha is 9-8 overall and 2-3 in Summit League play.  At the moment, the Mavs are in seventh place in the league standings.
  • UNO will be looking to snap a three-game conference losing streak.
  • The Mavs are 7-2 inside the friendly confines of Baxter Arena this season.  They own a 2-0 league mark at home as well.
  • Mikaela Shaw leads the Summit League in points (324) and points per game (19.1) this season.  The junior has been in double figures every game this season and has scored 20 or more six times.
  • Shaw ranks in the top 40 nationally in field goal percentage (32nd/54.9%), points (22nd/324), and points per game (39th/19.1).

Pioneer Preview

  • The Pioneers start a five-game road trip around the Summit League with a meeting against Western Illinois on Friday.
  • Denver has two of its last three games.  DU is 4-14 overall and 2-3 in Summit League play.
  • Jordyn Alt finished with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, her second double-double this season.
  • Jacqlyn Poss scored a game-high 18 points in the win for the Pioneers, while Paige Bradley added 11 points.
  • DU held the Mastodons to just 32.8 percent shooting.
  • The Pioneers average 52.9 points per game on the year, while allowing 63.4 points a night.
  • Denver shoots 38.1 percent from the field, while the opposition shoots 40.8 percent.
  • Denver is shooting 70.8 percent from the foul line, first in the Summit League.
  • The Pioneers are knocking down 4.3 3s per game this year and connect on 26.7 percent of its 3-point attempts on the season.
  • DU is dishing out 9.9 assists per contest in 2015-16.
  • Bradley is leading the team in scoring at 12.7 points and 3.4 assists per contest.
  • Alt is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 8.1 per game.

Omaha-Denver Series History

This will be the seventh all-time meeting between Omaha and Denver.  The Mavericks lead the all-time series, 4-2.  The two teams won on their home court last season.  DU defeated UNO in Denver, 60-53.  The Mavericks topped the Pioneers, 63-40, in the final women's basketball game at Sapp Field House.

Fantastic Fresh Faces

This season, the Mavericks roster features five freshmen and eight underclassmen.  The freshmen are Ellie Brecht, Sara Echelberry, Caroline Hogue, and Amber Vidal.  Joining them are underclassmen Vanessa Barajas, Remy Davenport, and Marissa Preston.

So far this season, underclassmen have combined to play in 124 games with 51 starts (41.1%).  The freshmen alone combined to play in 73 games with 19 starts (26%).  All told, the underclassmen have played in 2,168 minutes (63.3%), scored 697 points (62.4%), grabbed 293 rebounds (46.9%), dished out 129 assists (59.2%), had 89 blocks (91.8%), and had 56 steals (50.9%).

The freshmen have played in 1,142 minutes (33.3%) and scored 415 points (37.2%).  They have also grabbed 176 boards (28.2%), dished out 74 assists (33.9%), blocked 53 shots (54.6%) and have made 36 steals (32.7%).

NCAA Stat Rankings – Individual

  • Caroline Hogue is in the Top 15 nationally in blocked shots.  The freshman center is 10th in the nation with 48 blocks this year.  Jasmine Joyner of Chattanooga is the national leader with 69 blocks.
  • Hogue is also ranked 17th in blocks per game with 2.82.  Josie Stockill leads the nation with 4.2 blocks per game.
  • Mikaela Shaw ranks 14th nationally in field goals made (129) with Kelsey Plum of Washington leading the nation with 144 makes.
  • Shaw is also 30th in field goal percentage (54.9 percent), 24th in total points (324), and 40th in points per game (19.1).

NCAA Stat Rankings – Team

  • Omaha ranks 10th nationally in blocked shots (97) and 18th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.7).  Morehead State is the national leader with 125 blocks and blocks per game (6.9).
  • The Mavericks are also 59th nationally in 3-pointers made with 59.  Sacramento State leads the nation with 173 made 3-pointers.
