Mavs Visit IUPUI for Summit League Clash on Wednesday

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team looks to snap a two-game Summit League losing streak on Wednesday evening at IUPUI.  Tip-off from The Jungle in Indianapolis is set for 6 p.m. (CT).  Jon Green will have the radio call on Zone 2 1180 AM, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.

The Mavericks are coming off an 82-76 loss at South Dakota.  The Jaguars are coming off an eight point victory at Western Illinois last weekend, 68-60.

  • Omaha is 9-7 overall and 2-2 in Summit League play.  At the moment, the Mavs are in fifth place in the league standings.
  • UNO will be looking to snap a two-game conference losing streak.
  • Junior Mikaela Shaw cracked the 1,000 career point barrier last week with a 21-point performance against South Dakota State.  Shaw added 24 points to that total over the weekend against South Dakota.
  • Sophomore Remy Davenport has moved into 13th place all-time in 3-point field goals made with 96 through 44 games.
  • Shaw leads the Summit League in points per game (19.0ppg), field goals (119-222), and points (304).  She ranks in the top four in field goal percentage (53.6%) and free throws (3rd/56-81).
  • Shaw has scored in double-figures every game this season for Omaha.  She has scored 10 or more points in 25 of 27 games dating back to Jan. 22, 2015.
  • Freshman Caroline Hogue became the fifth Maverick to score over 20 points in a single game this season.  (Davenport, Shaw, Marissa Preston, Amber Vidal).
  • Freshman Ellie Brecht is currently fourth in the Summit League in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.5 percent, while Davenport is ranked 11th in the category at 37.8 percent.
  • Hogue continues to lead the Summit League with 2.8 blocks per game, sophomore Vanessa Barajas is fourth with 1.5 blocks per game, and Davenport is 14th with 0.7 bpg.
  • Freshman Amber Vidal is seventh in the league in assists per game at 3.0, Shaw is fifth in the league averaging 3.3 apg.
  • Bobbi Beckwith and Hogue each moved into the starting line-up at the start of Summit League play.

Shaw Joins 1,000 Point Club

Junior forward Mikaela Shaw scored her 1,000th career point against South Dakota State on Jan. 7, 2016.  Shaw became the 26th Maverick in program history to reach the milestone.  Shaw accomplished the feat scoring a team-high 21 points as UNO's comeback attempt against #RV SDSU fell just short, 68-58.

IUPUI Info

  • The Jaguars are 11-5 overall and 5-2 in Summit League play.  They are 5-2 at home this season.
  • Last time out, the Jags won at Western Illinois, 68-60.  They shot a season best 66.7 percent (8-12) from distance.
  • Danielle Lawrence won Summit League Player of the Week honors this week after putting up double-digit performances in five of IUPUI's last 6 games.
  • Junior center Mikale Rogers tallied her second double-double (12 points/11 rebounds) of the season against WIU.
  • IUPUI boasts the best scoring defense in the Summit League (57.9 ppg).
  • The Jags are 25th in NCAA Div. I in 3-pt FG defense (25.9 percent).

Omaha-IUPUI Series History

This will be the seventh all-time meeting between Omaha and IUPUI.  The Jaguars lead the series, 5-1.  Last season, the two teams each won on their home court.  Omaha defeated IUPUI at Sapp Fieldhouse on Jan. 17, 2014, 66-49.  Two weeks later, the Jags defeated the Mavs in The Jungle, 68-49.

Fantastic Fresh Faces

This season, the Mavericks roster features five freshmen and eight underclassmen.  The freshmen are Ellie Brecht, Sara Echelberry, Caroline Hogue, and Amber Vidal.  Joining them are underclassmen Vanessa Barajas, Remy Davenport, and Marissa Preston.

So far this season, underclassmen have combined to play in 116 games with 48 starts (41.4%).  The freshmen alone combined to play in 68 games with 17 starts (25%).  All told, the underclassmen have played in 2,047 minutes (63.5%), scored 668 points (63.1%), grabbed 283 rebounds (47.2%), dished out 121 assists (58.7%), had 85 blocks (91.4%), and had 57 steals (52.8%).

The freshmen have played in 1,088 minutes (33.7%) and scored 395 points (37.3%).  They have also grabbed 171 boards (28.5%), dished out 73 assists (35.4%), blocked 49 shots (52.7%) and have made 35 steals (22.4%).

NCAA Stat Rankings – Individual

  • Caroline Hogue is in the Top 15 nationally in blocked shots.  The freshman center is 10th in the nation with 44 blocks this year.  Jasmine Joyner of Chattanooga is the national leader with 61 blocks.
  • Hogue is also ranked 20th in blocks per game with 2.75.  Josie Stockill leads the nation with 4.29 blocks per game.
  • Mikaela Shaw ranks 19th nationally in field goals made (119) with Kelsey Plum of Washington leading the nation with 144 makes.
  • Shaw is also 43rd in field goal percentage (53.6 percent), 27th in total points (304), and 39th in points per game (19.0).

NCAA Stat Rankings – Team

  • Omaha ranks 9th nationally in blocked shots (93) and 14th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.8).  Morehead State is the national leader with 119 blocks and blocks per game (7.0).
