Fox Tosses Complete Game As UNO Defeats UIW 6-2

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Fox went the distance on Friday as the Omaha baseball team defeated Incarnate Word 6-2 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 20-31 on the year, while the Cardinals dropped to 21-32.

Fox (5-4) tossed a complete game in his final start of the season, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. The Thornton, Colo., native's 9.0 innings marked a season-long outing. Garret Cooper (5-7) was tagged with the loss for UIW, giving up six runs on 10 hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Junior Clayton Taylor led the Mavericks at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and his team-best eighth home run of the season. Junior Alex Schultz and senior Daniel Jewett also went 2-for-4 and scored a run apiece for the afternoon.

As it did in Thursday's opener, Incarnate Word was first to get on the board, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Consecutive singles by Brance Kahle and Christian Divelbiss put two runners on, and both later scored courtesy of Trey Rodriguez's two-run double to right center for a 2-0 lead.

Omaha chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the inning, with junior Alex Mortensen leading off with a solo homer to left to make it 2-1. The Mavericks tied it in the third on Taylor's solo homer to left, stalling the game at 2-2.

In the fifth, Schultz and junior Collin Leif deposited back-to-back singles, and a sacrifice bunt by junior Cole Gruber put both runners in scoring position. Taylor then drove a two-run single through the right side, giving Omaha a 4-2 lead.

The Mavericks made their final mark in the sixth to add another pair of runs on the board. Redshirt freshman Isaac Holt worked a leadoff walk and Jewett had an infield single to put two more runners aboard, and a sacrifice bunt by Leif advanced both into scoring position. Gruber then laced a two-run single down the left field line, extending Omaha's lead to 6-2.

Incarnate Word managed two runners with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Fox got out of the jam with a final flyout, finishing off UNO's 6-2 victory to even the weekend series at one game apiece.

Omaha and Incarnate Word conclude their non-conference series on Saturday, May 22, with first pitch at 2 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town. Links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as Omaha will celebrate its six seniors with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
