Mavericks to Host North Dakota and Kansas City

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha softball team welcomes Kansas City and North Dakota to Westside Field at Westbrook for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders this week.  The Mavericks will have a rematch against Kansas City on Tuesday, April 7 with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.  The next day, North Dakota visits Omaha with games slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. 

Leading off for Omaha

  • As a team, the Mavericks are batting .251 on the season, but own a .271 average in Summit League play.
  • In conference play, Omaha owns a .436 slugging percentage while holding the opposition to a .397 slugging percentage.
  • UNO has outscored its opponents 161-147 and have outscored conference foes by a 44-35 margin.  Among its 16 wins this season, Omaha has recorded four run-rule victories, five come-from-behind wins and two decisions in its favor in extra innings.
  • Omaha has smashed 32 homeruns this season and allowed only 19.
  • Omaha has a 3.31 ERA this season with 164 strikeouts and only 74 walks.
  • Head coach Jeanne Scarpello is one win away from earning her 650th career victory in 16 seasons of leading the Maverick program.

D.Y.K.?  (Did You Know?)

  • Kelly Pattison went 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles to go along with six runs scored and two RBIs against South Dakota State over the weekend.
  • Tonya Peterson hit .556 (5-for-9) against SDSU with three doubles, four runs scores, and five RBIs.
  • Allie Mathewson, Campbell Ditto, and Lizzie Noble each hit homeruns this weekend.
  • Ditto, Mathewson, Peterson, and Tara Trede are the only Mavericks to appear in all 36 games this season.
  • Omaha and North Dakota will be meeting for the 53rd time in the history of both programs.  Omaha leads the all-time series, 48-4.

About the Mavericks

Omaha went 1-2 at South Dakota State over the weekend.  The Mavericks are 17-19 overall and hold 5-4 Summit League record.  UNO is tied with IUPUI for second place in the Summit League standings.  This season Omaha owns a 10-9 record at neutral sites and a 6-2 home mark, but are 1-8 on the road this season.

Tonya Peterson owns a .316 batting average to lead the Mavericks.  The senior leads the team with eight doubles, 23 walks, 26 RBIs and owns a team-best .458 on-base percentage.  Allie Mathewson has a .308 average in 120 at-bats.  Mathewson leads the team in runs scored (29), hits (37), slugging percentage (.550), and stolen bases (11).  She is also tied for the team lead in homeruns (7).  Junior catcher Campbell Ditto is tied for the team lead in homeruns with seven and has 18 RBIs.  Lizzie Noble has a .282 batting average and a .500 slugging percentage.  Noble has four homers and 24 RBIs this season.

In the circle, freshman Jaylee Hinrichs is 8-8 overall with a 3.43 ERA.  Hinrichs has earned two Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors.  Senior Kat Barrow owns a 7-6 mark with a 2.26 ERA.  The senior has 76 strikeouts this season along with two shut-outs.  Calry Nielsen and Lizzie Noble each have picked up wins this season.  Nielsen also has the teams only save.

Collectively, the Mavericks are hitting .251 with 40 doubles, four triples, 32 homeruns and 153 RBIs.  Omaha has a .412 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .337.  UNO is 36-for-42 in stolen base attempts and has drawn a total of 98 walks.  The Mavericks' pitching staff has posted a 3.31 ERA, good for the third-lowest mark in the league, in 228.1 innings of work while striking out 164 and allowing 74 walks.  In the circle, Omaha has five shut-outs and threw back-to-back shutouts against Fort Wayne on March 21-22.

Mastering the Summit

  • Campbell Ditto and Allie Mathewson are sixth in the Summit League with seven homeruns.
  • Tonya Peterson has drawn 23 walks this season to lead the league.  Peterson is eighth with 26 RBIs. 
  • Ditto is in second in the league with 22 walks.
  • Allie Mathewson is fifth in the league with 29 runs scored, seventh in stolen bases with 11, and ninth with 36 hits.
  • Lizzie Noble has 24 RBIs this season, which ranks eleventh in the Summit League.
  • Pitcher Kat Barrow has pitched 108.1 innings which ranks third in the conference.  Barrow has 76 strikeouts and a 2.33 ERA which ranks fourth in the league.  She ranks sixth in games won (7) and third in complete games (10).
  • Pitcher Jaylee Hinrichs is third in the league with eight wins.  Hinrichs' three shut-outs this season ranks third in the league.  Hinrichs ranks fifth in the league with 70 strikeouts.

Series Information

Omaha and Kansas City have met five times in the history of each program with the Mavericks owning a 3-2 advantage.  Earlier this season, UMKC defeated Omaha 5-0 at the Jayhawk Invitational.

North Dakota and Omaha have met 52 times going into Wednesday's games.  UNO owns a 48-4 all-time advantage over UND.

A Look at the Kangaroos

Kansas City owns a 21-20 overall mark and a 2-4 record in the Western Athletic Conference.  UMKC owns a 2-3 mark at home with a 6-10 mark and the road, and are 13-7 at neutral sites.

The Kangaroos feature four batters that have a .300 or better average.  Cinda Ramos owns a .369 batting average with a .539 slugging percentage.  Katie Kelley has a .365 average and a .708 slugging percentage with 14 doubles, 11 homeruns and 43 RBIs.  Brooke Parker has 21 stolen bases in 24 attempts.

In the circle, Kansas City has three pitchers with six or more wins.  Katie Kelly owns an 8-8 record with a 4.39 ERA and 92 strikeouts.  Cinda Ramos is 7-5 with a 4.51 ERA and 60 strikeouts, while Amber Grove is 6-6 with a 3.67 ERA.

Notes on North Dakota

North Dakota is 8-27 as of April 6 with a doubleheader against South Dakota State to be played prior to coming to Omaha.  UND owns a 0-9 Big Sky conference record and is 2-15 on the road.

North Dakota lost three straight Big Sky games over the weekend at Montana.  They have four batters over .300 at the plate this season.  Shelby Hard leads the team with a .347 average in 35 games.  Hard also leads the team with 11 home runs, 29 RBIs, and a .752 slugging percentage.

Hannah Bergh has a 5-13 overall record and a team-low 6.20 ERA.  Bergh has 45 strikeouts and 24 walks on the season.

On Deck

Omaha wraps up a five game home stand on Wednesday, April 15 with a single game against Nebraska at 6:00 p.m.
