INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Omaha softball team dropped a pair of Summit League games to IUPUI on Friday at the IUPUI Softball Complex, falling 4-3 in game one before dropping a 6-3 decision in game two.
UNO drops to 21-25 overall and hold a 5-8 mark in Summit League play. IUPUI improved to 30-12 overall and 9-5 in the Summit League. The two teams play the final game of the series on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. (CT).
IUPUI 4, Omaha 3 (game one)
IUPUI overcame a 3-1 deficit in the opener and seized the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Allie Mathewson got Omaha on the board quickly by leading off the game with a solo home run to center field. Nicole Warren doubled the score in the top of the second with a solo homer to right center to put the Mavericks on top, 2-0.
IUPUI got a run back in the bottom of the second on back-to-back extra base hits to make the score 2-1.
Omaha struck again in the top of the third inning. Mathewson and Tonya Peterson reached base on infield hits. Following a fielder's choice, Megan May singled up the middle to score Peterson and make the score 3-1 in UNO's favor.
The Jaguars loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on a pair of walks and a fielder's choice. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3. A passed ball with two outs gave IUPUI the lead, 4-3.
Omaha threatened in the top of the fourth, but was not able to put a run on the board. Lia Mancuso opened the inning with a single to center field. Warren singled through the left side to put two runners on base. Tara Trede reached base following an error by the IUPUI second baseman. Mancuso was forced out at home on a Mathewson fielder's choice. UNO's threat was ended when Kelly Pattison lined into an inning ending double play.
Brooke Boetjer allowed only one Omaha batter to reach base the final three innings.
Mathewson and Warren each had two hits including solo home runs. May went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
Jaylee Hinrichs (12-11) pitched 6.0 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
IUPUI 6, Omaha 3 (game two)
IUPUI jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before holding off a late Omaha rally to sweep the doubleheader.
The Jaguars put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning off a home run from Ali Mosier.
IUPUI added five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Mosier hit a grand slam home run to right center field to make the score 5-0. Later in the inning, the Jaguars added a run as Maggie Good doubled down the right field line to drive in Eryn Patterson for a 6-0 IUPUI lead.
Campbell Ditto and Lia Mancuso opened the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. Sydney Hames cleared the bases with a one-out home run to left field. Relief pitcher Emili Escamilla retired the final two Omaha batters to secure the win, 6-3.
Three Mavericks had perfect days at the plate. Ditto went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Tara Trede went 2-for-2. Hames went 1-for-1 with a home run and three RBIs. Mancuso and Kelly Pattison each had a single.
Kat Barrow (7-9) started the game and pitched 1.2 innings allowing six earned runs on five hits with a walk. Carly Nielsen pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for Omaha. Nielsen allowed four hits while striking out two.
