VERMILLION, South Dakota – The Omaha softball team dropped a doubleheader at South Dakota on Friday afternoon, 7-3 and 11-1 (6 innings).
The Mavericks are now 20-23 overall and 5-6 in Summit League play. USD improved to 17-22-1 overall and 8-3 in league play.
The series wraps up with a 12:00 p.m. game on Saturday.
South Dakota 7, Omaha 3 (game one)
Nicole Warren hit a solo home run in the top of the second that gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead. South Dakota answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.
Allie Mathewson's solo home run in the fifth put Omaha back on top, 2-1.
The Coyotes put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Warren hit a lead-off home run to start the seventh inning, but it was not enough.
Jaylee Hinrichs (11-10) suffered the loss after tossing 5.2 innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits while striking out three. Kat Barrow came on to record the final out in the sixth via strike out.
Warren went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and two RBIs, while Mathewson went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Kelly Pattison had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of singles.
South Dakota 11, Omaha 1 (game two - 6 innings)
Omaha loaded the bases in the top of the first inning in game two. Allie Mathewson got things started with a single to center field, before Kelly Pattison and Lizzie Noble walked. Freshman Megan May singled to center field to bring home Mathewson.
South Dakota took the lead with two runs in the second inning. The Coyotes added three runs in the third and a single run in the fourth. USD took the win on the run-rule in the sixth inning, as five runs on three hits ended the game with the final score of 11-1.
Mathewson recorded three of the six hits in game two for Omaha as she went 3-for-3. Maverick hurler Kat Barrow (7-8) went 2.0 innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking one. Carly Nielsen relieved Barrow and pitched 3.2 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking one.
