WICHITA, Kan. – The Omaha softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader against Wichita State on Tuesday afternoon, as the Shockers went on to win 7-5 and 4-1. The Mavericks are now 16-17 on the season, while the Shockers improve to 19-18.
Omaha returns to action this weekend with three Summit League contests against South Dakota State in Brookings, South Dakota. UNO will play two games on Friday, April 3 at noon and 2:00 p.m. The Mavs will wrap up the weekend with one game on Saturday, April 4 starting at 11:00 a.m. Links for live stats will be made available on OMavs.com.
Wichita State 7, Omaha 5 (game one)
Omaha jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Wichita State. Senior Allie Mathewson opened the game with a solo homerun to left field. It was the sixth homerun of the season for Mathewson. Kelly Pattison singled to centerfield later in the inning to drive in Campbell Ditto and Lizzie Noble to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
Wichita State pushed three runs across the board in the bottom of the third inning on four hits to tie the game, 3-3.
UNO retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Nicole Warren drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a Mathewson double. Tonya Peterson drove in Mathewson with a single for a 5-3 Omaha lead.
The Shockers put the first two batters on base in the bottom of the sixth against starter Kat Barrow. Following a pitching change, Wichita State loaded the bases against Omaha's new pitcher, Jaylee Hinrichs. The Shockers used an RBI single and a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5. A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch added two more runs for Wichita State to make the final, 7-5.
Mathewson went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs on a double and a home run. Pattison drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Ditto added a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with couple of runs scored. Noble added a double and a run scored, while Peterson had a single.
Barrow pitched 5.0 innings allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strike out. Hinrichs (7-6) took the loss by pitching 1.0 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Wichita State 4, Omaha 1 (game two)
Wichita State starter Katie Malone held Omaha to one run on four hits, while two Maverick errors helped the Shockers take a 4-1 win in game two of the double header.
Omaha took the lead in the top of the third inning. Tara Trede hit a two-out single to give the Mavericks a base runner. Allie Mathewson slapped a double to center to drive in Trede for a 1-0 UNO lead.
The Shockers scored three runs on two hits and an error to take the lead in the bottom of the third, 3-1. Wichita State added an insurance in the bottom of the sixth to make the final, 4-1.
Mathewson and Pattison each had a double, while Trede added a single. Hinrichs (7-7) pitched 6.0 innings allowing four unearned runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
