North Dakota Holds Off Maverick Sweep, 4-2

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – North Dakota broke through a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning on Sunday, as the Omaha baseball team fell 4-2 at Millard North High School. With the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 7-8 (0-0 Summit League), while UND improved to 2-8 (0-0 WAC).

Redshirt freshman Ryan Cate carried Omaha at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Daniel Jewett also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4.

The win went to UND reliever Ellery Bresnahan (1-0), who threw 1.2 scoreless innings without giving up a hit and struck out two. Sophomore Shane Meltz (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings, walking one and fanning two. Jeff Campbell (1) earned the save after limiting UNO to two hits in the final 2.0 innings.

Omaha got on the board first, putting together a three-hit, two-run effort in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Clayton Taylor started it off with a one-out double to right center and was driven in promptly with Cate's RBI double down the left field line. Freshman Adam Caniglia came up immediately after with a single to right, scoring junior Alex Mortensen and giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

North Dakota pulled within one in the fifth, as Cooper Maas drove in Daniel Lockhert with a single to right that made it 2-1. UND tied it at 2-2 in the next inning when Leuschke swatted an RBI double to right, plating Campbell.

UND took the lead for good in the eighth. With two outs, Ryan Reese drew a walk and Dalton Leuschke doubled down the left field line to put two on, after which a Lockhert single through the left side scored both runners and gave North Dakota a 4-2 advantage.

The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, with Cate singling up the middle, Caniglia being hit by a pitch and Jewett singling through the left side. UND got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout, then finished it off with three straight outs in the ninth to hang on for the win.

Omaha returns to action on Friday, March 13, opening Summit League play with South Dakota State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
