Mavs Sink NDSU 12-7, Win Sixth Straight

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team completed its second straight weekend sweep on Sunday, defeating North Dakota State 12-7 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, the Mavericks remain unbeaten in conference play and improve to 13-8 (6-0 Summit League), while the Bison drop to 5-14 (1-5 Summit League).

Omaha's sixth straight victory came on its fourth consecutive with double-digit runs scored. As a team, Omaha totaled 16 hits on the day.

Sophomore Shane Meltz (2-2) recorded the win in relief, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings with four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. The loss went to NDSU starter Reed Pfannenstein (0-2), who lasted 3.0 innings and surrendered four runs on eight hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

Senior Daniel Jewett, junior Cole Gruber and Alex Mortensen led the offensive charge for the Mavericks. Gruber finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored, and Jewett was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Mortensen went 3-for-5 with a run scored and four more driven in, bringing his weekend total to 12 RBI.

North Dakota State was led by four hits apiece from Taylor Sanders and Ben Petersen.

Omaha jumped out early in the first inning, with Mortensen's first RBI single to center scoring Gruber for a 1-0 advantage.

NDSU took the lead in the third with three runs on four hits, starting with Sanders' RBI single up the middle to score Aiden Hook. Danny Regan later drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Sanders, and Juan Gamez was then hit by a pitch to score Petersen, putting the Bison up 3-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Omaha regained its advantage in the bottom half of the inning. Gruber opened with a double down the left field line, advanced on Clayton Taylor flyout and came in by way of a Mortensen single to right center. Senior Justin Threlkeld then got on with an infield single, and redshirt freshman Ryan Cate's RBI single to left drove in Mortensen. Threlkeld and Cate both moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by freshman Cole Patterson, and Jewett finished it off with a single to left to score Threlkeld for a 4-3 lead.

The Mavericks added another run in the fourth when junior Alex Schultz reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored with a bunt single by Gruber and an error on the play. In the sixth, UNO increased its lead by three with a trio of hits and a Bison miscue. Jewett led off by singling up the middle and was plated when Gruber reached on a fielding error. Two batters later, Mortensen sent a two-run single to center, extending the score to 8-3.

In the seventh, junior Marcus Ethen earned a leadoff walk and Patterson singled through the left side. Two batters later, with the two runners in scoring position, Caniglia singled to center to score both. A Schultz walk and Gruber single moved Caniglia to third, and Taylor grounded out to collect the RBI in scoring Caniglia for an 11-3 tally.

NDSU's eighth inning was marked by a two-run homer to left from Sanders, which cut Omaha's lead to 11-5.

Omaha then piled on another run in the bottom of the inning, as Threlkeld and Ethen drew back-to-back walks, then moved up on a wild pitch. Threlkeld came in on a single up the middle by Jewett, making it 12-5.

NDSU brought out its pinch hitters in the top of the ninth, with Mason Pierzchalski singling through the left side and scoring on JD Larimer's subsequent RBI double to left center. The Bison managed one more run with David Ernst's RBI double to right that drove in Larimer for a 12-7 score. Junior Robert Calvano came in to face the final batter, getting Sanders on a strikeout looking to finish the day.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, March 25, traveling to Kansas State for a non-conference matchup.
