OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's tennis opened the 2015 Summit League portion of the schedule with a 6-1 win over Western Illinois. The Mavericks are now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play, while the Leathernecks are 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Omaha won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. John Ellis and Marko Minic got off to a fast start at number three doubles as they defeated Jacob Sanders and Ross Smith, 6-0. At number two doubles, Erik Anderson and Ignace Warson picked up a win over Chris Bunch and Surya Sawhney, 6-0. Colin Buckley and Nathan Greteman finished the doubles sweep with a tough win over Christoph Haertel and Nikola Pavlovic, 6-4.
In singles action, James McManus gave Omaha a 2-0 match lead with a win over Sawhney at number four singles, 6-0, 6-0. Warson picked up a quick victory over Smith at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0. Minic secured the team win for the Mavericks at number five singles with a victory over Sanders, 6-1, 6-1.
Anderson kept the winning ways going for Omaha at number two singles. Anderson defeated Bunch, 6-3, 6-2. At number one singles, Buckley won a tough match in straight sets over Haertel, 6-4, 6-3. Ellis lost a tight match in three sets to Pavlovic, 6-2, 4-6, 0-1 (6-10).
Omaha returns to the court on Sunday, February 8 against Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The match is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
