Omaha sped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Taylor doubled down the rightfield line and Schultz had an infield single to put two on. Schultz then stole second, and an errant throw allowed Taylor to score.
The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, with Kyle Barrett leading off with a single to left and Storm Wilson singling to right. JaVon Shelby was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ka'ai Tom's sacrifice fly to center scored Barrett to make it 1-1. UK took the lead at 2-1 in the sixth, when Marcus Carson led off with a walk and stole second, then came across on an RBI single down the rightfield line by Wilson.
Omaha struck back in the eighth, tallying four runs on six consecutive hits with two outs. The furious offensive push was sparked by a Taylor single to center, followed by singles through the left side by Schultz and junior
Alex Mortensen, the second of which drove in Taylor. Redshirt freshman
Ryan Cate then had an RBI single to the shortstop that pushed Schultz across, followed by an RBI single to center by Threlkeld that scored Mortensen. A final base knock to center by Jewett plated Cate, putting the Mavericks in the driver's seat at 5-2.
But the Wildcats rallied in the bottom of the ninth, notching a trio of runs on four hits to even the score at 5-5 and send the game to extra innings. Neither team scored until the bottom of the 14th, when Kentucky plated the winning run on Thomas Bernal's bases-loaded single to third that scored Wilson the 6-5 win.
