The win went to senior left-hander
Cole Volkers (1-0) in relief after he threw 2.0 hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Taylor Goshen took the loss in relief, surrendering a pair of runs on two hits and two walks in the final 2.0 innings. Sophomore
Brett Sasse earned his first career save, holding WSU to one hit in the last inning.
Junior
Cole Gruber led the Mavericks offensively, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.
Wichita State was led by Sam Hilliard and Jordan Farris, who both went 3-for-5, as well as Mikel Mucha, who was 2-for-4.
The Shockers took a 4-0 lead in the early stages of the game, opening with a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Hilliard singled to left center and stole second, then came in on Ryan Tinkham's RBI double down the left field line. Farris followed immediately with an RBI single to center to score Tinkham, making it 2-0.
Wichita State added another two runs on two hits in the second. Trey Vickers drew a leadoff walk and Mucha doubled to right center to put two runners in scoring position for the Shockers. Two batters later, Hilliard came up with a two-run single through the right side, extending WSU's lead to 4-0.
The Mavericks responded swiftly in the top of the third, with junior
Collin Leif and Gruber both securing a hit to start the inning. Junior
Clayton Taylor then laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error, allowing Leif to score. A wild pitch then pushed Gruber across to cut the margin to 4-2. The Mavericks drew back-to-back walks from redshirt freshman
Ryan Cate and junior
Alex Mortensen, loading the bases with no outs and prompting a Shocker pitching change. Another wild pitch allowed Taylor to score, and senior
Justin Threlkeld's sacrifice fly to right helped UNO tally its fourth run of the frame as Cate came in and tied the game at 4-4.
The score stalled until the top of the ninth, when Omaha finally took the lead. Redshirt freshman
Isaac Holt led off with a bunt single, and the Mavs loaded the bases once more with walks by Gruber and Taylor. As Cate reached on a fielder's choice, pinch-running freshman
Cole Patterson scored on a throwing error to make it 5-4. Mortensen then delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to left that drove in Gruber, pushing the score to 6-4.
The Shockers threatened in the bottom of the ninth with Hilliard singling to right with one out, but UNO quickly shut down the threat and went on to take the 6-4 win.
Omaha returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 26, facing Saint Leo at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. (CT).
