Mavericks No-Hit Chicago State in 4-0 Victory

Box Score EMERSON, Ga. -- Behind a stellar mound performance for a combined for a no-hitter, the Omaha baseball team defeated Chicago State 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Perfect Game Park South at LakePoint. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 3-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Cougars dropped to 0-5 (0-0 WAC).

Senior right-hander Zach Williamsen (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, throwing five hitless innings and allowing just one walk with five strikeouts. Senior Tyler Hamer also tossed four innings of hitless relief, walking one and registering four more Ks. The loss went to Tyler Abbott (0-1), who surrendered four runs on five hits and three walks.

The combined no-hitter was the third of any UNO team in the Bob Herold era and the first by a Maverick staff since April 9, 2004.

Junior Clayton Taylor led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with his first home run of the season, two runs scored and two more driven in. Junior Cole Gruber also had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, and junior Alex Mortensen tallied a hit and an RBI.

Omaha notched all its runs early, opening with one score on three straight hits in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Taylor singled through the left side and redshirt freshman Ryan Cate singled to left center, putting two runners on. Mortensen then delivered an RBI double to right, spotting UNO a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks posted another run in the second with Gruber's one-out sacrifice fly to left that drove in Schultz, pushing it to 2-0.

Omaha added its final two runs in the fourth. Gruber laced a two-out single to right center, and Taylor followed with a two-run homer to right center. Over the remaining five innings, the Maverick pitching staff continued to shut down Chicago State's lineup, allowing just three Cougars on base en route to the 4-0 victory.

Omaha closes the Chicago State series on Sunday, Feb. 22, with first pitch at 11 a.m. (CT) at Perfect Game Park South at LakePoint.
