Mavs, Bison Square Off on Valentine's Day

FARGO, North Dakota - The Omaha women's basketball team will play its final Summit League road game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 14 against North Dakota State.  Tip-off from the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse is set for 2:00 p.m. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.

The Teams

Omaha (7-17, 2-10 Summit League) lost at South Dakota on Thursday night, 83-69.  The Mavericks had three players in double-digit scoring and shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the field.

North Dakota State (9-15, 5-7 Summit League) dropped a 67-41 decision at Oral Roberts Wednesday night.

Scouting the Bison

North Dakota State (9-15, 5-7 Summit League) returns home after a midweek trip to Tulsa, Okla. Oral Roberts defeated NDSU, 67-41.  Holly Johnson had a team-high 12 points game and grabbed six rebounds.  Liz Keena had 10 points and a team-high eight boards.  Brooke LeMar chipped in 10 points and dished out three assists. 

The Bison are led by LeMar who averages 19.4 points and 4.4 assists per game.  Johnson averages 12 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.  Merna Whittle and Taylor Thunstedt each average a shade over eight points per game.  Whittle averages 6.9 boards per game.

NDSU averages 68.0 points per game and 37.9 rebounds per game.  As a team, North Dakota State shoots 39.6 percent from the field (607-of-1,532) and .327 from long range (150-of-459). 

Marren Walseth is in her first year as head coach for the North Dakota State Bison.  She holds a career record of 9-15.  Walseth is the 10th head coach in NDSU history.  The coach previously assisted Penn State Universtiy where she helped the Lady Lions to three Big Ten championships and four NCAA tournament appearances including two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.

  • Omaha dropped a 83-69 decision Thursday night at South Dakota. 
  • Senior Taijhe Kelly recorded a season-high 20 points and had three blocks on the night.  Kelly also grabbed four rebounds.
  • Mikaela Shaw added 18 points and five rebounds while freshman Remy Davenport contributed 15 points in the contest. 
  • Madi Robson dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.
  • As a team, the Mavs shot 52.0 percent (26-50) from the field and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.
  • Omaha defeated Western Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Sapp Fieldhouse, 54-51. 
  • Shaw had a game-high 25 points on 10-for-25 shootings, including two 3-pointers.  The sophomore guard grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals.
  • Kelly had seven points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots off the bench.  Brianna Bogard added five points, while Robson chipped in four points and five assists.
  • Against WIU, Omaha shot 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor and 5-for-15 from distance.  The UNO defense held Western Illinois to 27.1 percent (19-for-70) from the floor and 15.0 percent (3-for-20) from 3-point range.  The Leathernecks held a 45-41 advantage in rebounding.
  • Shaw leads the Mavericks in scoring and rebounding this season. She averages 14.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
  • Bogard is second on the team in scoring. She is averaging 9.5 points per game.
  • Bough leads the team in and steals (43). She is also second on the team in rebounds (127).
  • Robson leads the team in assists (86).
  • Shaw has scored in double-digits 14 times this season, which is the most on the team. She has had five double-doubles this season as well.
  • Kelly leads the team with 72 blocked shots. She has blocked four or more shots in a game nine times this season.
  • Omaha is 1-5 against teams appearing in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25. The Mavs lost to Northern Colorado (RV), North Dakota (RV), South Dakota (RV/#25), and South Dakota State (#14); but defeated #14 Bakersfield, 80-68.

The Series

Saturday's match-up is the 56th all-time meeting between the two programs.  North Dakota State leads the series 43-12.  The Bison defeated the Mavericks in Omaha on Jan. 22, 77-60.

Omaha will return home for their final home stand of the season beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 18.  The Mavs will host South Dakota State for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Sapp Field House.
