Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Omaha men's basketball team won the visitors' bracket final of the Global Sports Classic Tuesday afternoon, defeating Southern 74-53 at Cox Pavilion. With the win, the Mavericks finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with a record of 8-6 (0-0 Summit League), while the Jaguars drop to 8-5 (0-0 SWAC). UNO finishes the Global Sports Classic with a record of 3-1.
Junior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins scored a game-leading and season-high 21 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots from the field while going 4-for-4 at the line. The Omaha Central product added five rebounds, five assists, five steals and a block.
Senior forward
Jake White chipped in 16 points and six rebounds, and senior guard
Devin Patterson had 15 points with two rebounds, two steals and an assist. Senior guard
Kyler Erickson pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, which was also a career high.
Omaha shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the floor, 29 percent (4-of-14) from long range and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the stripe. Southern finished at a 37 percent (19-of-51) clip from the field, 25 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range and 46 percent (12-of-26) at the line. The Mavericks held the edge in rebounding (43-31), assists (14-5), blocks (3-1) and steals (9-5).
Southern was led by 18 points and eight rebounds from Jared Sam and another 12 points from Trelun Banks.
Omaha never trailed, building a 15-3 advantage to start the game. The Mavericks grabbed a lead of 17 by 39-22 with 1:13 left in the first half, courtesy of four straight free throws from Patterson and Hollins. Patterson paced UNO with 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting with two threes in the first 20 minutes, while Hollins totaled 14 more on 5-of-8 shooting from the field with four steals. UNO also forced 12 Jaguar turnovers, converting those into 18 of their first-half points en route to a 39-24 halftime lead.
White accounted for Omaha's first seven points of the second half, using three layups and a free throw to make it 46-27. With 8:50 left, the Mavericks took their largest of the day at 64-39 with a Hollins layup and a big 3-pointer from Erickson. UNO never let Southern back within less than 19, and the Mavericks' 55 percent second-half shooting helped them clinch the 74-53 victory.
Omaha opens Summit League play on Friday, Jan. 1, welcoming Western Illinois. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Baxter Arena, and Gary Sharp and Grant Nieland will have the radio call on 1180 Zone 2. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
