Mavs Welcome Utah Valley in Non-Conference Finale

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a Tuesday afternoon matinee against Utah Valley.  Tip-off at Baxter Arena is set for 2 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Caroline Hogue poured in a career-high 16 points against Creighton on Sunday evening, going 6-for-18 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point distance.  The freshman has scored in double figures in three straight games.  Hogue leads the Summit League with 28 blocks this season and is 13th nationally in the category.

Mikaela Shaw leads the team with 18.5 points per game and needs just 76 to become the 26th Maverick to score 1,000 career points.  The junior had 16 points against Creighton on Sunday and grabbed seven rebounds.  Shaw eclipsed the 500 career rebound mark last week at SIUE.

Shaw is now tied with teammate Amber Vidal for 5th in the Summit League with 3.6 assists per game.  Vidal chipped in two assists in Sunday evening's loss.

Junior Abi Lujan scored four points and pulled down seven rebounds against Creighton on Sunday.  Lujan is second on the UNO roster with 6.5 boards per game.

The Mavericks are 7-4 on the season and look to snap a two game skid in their final non-conference game.  UNO is 5-1 in its new home Baxter Arena.

Watching the Wolverines

Utah Valley is coming off a 10-day break when Tuesday's game tips off and are 6-6 on the season.  The Wolverines are looking to snap a five game losing skid after starting the year 6-1.  Last time out, UVU lost 61-56 to intrastate foe Weber State.

Junior Rhaiah Spooner-Knight has been hot for the Wolverines, scoring in double figures three times this season.  Spooner-Knight leads UVU in scoring averaging 13.8 points per game.  She also leads the team in offensive rebounds and free throws made.

Series History

  • Omaha and Utah Valley are meeting for the second time in program history.
  • Last season, the Wolverines defeated the Mavericks 59-57 in Orem, Utah.

Up Next

The Mavericks will begin preparations for the start of Summit League play when they return from Christmas break.  Omaha will host North Dakota State on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.  This will be the first visit to Baxter Arena for the Bison.

Noteworthy Performances – Individual

  • Caroline Hogue set a career best with 16 points on Sunday, Dec. 20 against Creighton.  Hogue also drained a career best three 3-pointers while grabbing six rebounds.
  • Mikaela Shaw scored a season high 31 points against Eastern Illinois on Dec. 6.  Shaw was 13-of-21 from the field.  She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.
  • Shaw has had four double-doubles this season (Indiana State, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, and SIUE).
  • Amber Vidal went for a career-best 20 points on Dec. 3 against UMKC.
  • Abi Lujan grabbed 12 rebounds in two straight games to start December.  The junior pulled down 12 boards against UMKC on Dec. 3 and followed that up with 12 more against Eastern Illinois on Dec. 6.
  • Vanessa Barajas blocked nine shots against Illinois State on Nov. 29 to set a program record.
  • Hogue set a career-record in rebounds against Waldorf (12) and blocks against Eastern Illinois (5).
  • Ellie Brecht went for 17 points against Illinois State on Nov. 29.  Brecht was 5-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line and also pulled down a career best seven rebounds.

Noteworthy Performances – Team

  • Omaha set a program record with 39 3-point attempts in the season opener against Central Florida.  The Mavericks connected on 10 of those attempts.
  • UNO went for 95 points against Waldorf in late November.  Omaha shot 53.9 percent (41-76) from the floor.
  • The Mavericks set a program record with 15 blocked shots against Illinois State on Nov. 29.
  • Omaha had a season low four turnovers against Eastern Illinois on Dec. 6.
  • The Mavericks played their first overtime game of the season against SIUE on Dec. 13.
  • UNO shot 53.4 percent (31-58) against SIUE.
