OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team played its first road contest on Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 to Iowa State at Ames Racquet and Fitness. UNO is now 1-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the year, while the Cyclones improve to 1-0 (0-0 Big 12).
The Mavericks began the day with doubles play. The No. 1 duo of freshman
Michelle Lo and senior Jaqueline Baude were defeated 6-0. At the No. 2 position, junior
Molly Matricardi and sophomore
Kenzie Hill fell by a score of 6-2, and at No. 3, sophomores Rebecca Stafford and
Allison Johnson were defeated 6-3 as ISU took a 1-0 advantage.
In the first singles match of the afternoon, Samantha Budai topped Matricardi at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. The Cyclones picked up another singles win with Meghan Cassens over Baude, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3, before Hill was dropped by Ana Gasparovic, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5.
Alejandra Galvis then defeated Stafford 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, and Lo surrendered to Ksenia Pronina at the No. 1 slot, 6-1, 6-1. The day was capped with the No. 6 matchup, with Johnson falling 6-1, 6-1 to Talisa Merchiers.
The Mavericks have a quick turnaround ahead, as they travel to Des Moines on Saturday, Jan. 31 to play former MIAA foe Truman at 2 p.m.
