Omaha Takes Down Creighton, 4-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- In a clash of crosstown rivals, the Omaha baseball team defeated Creighton, 4-1, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha on Tuesday night. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 20-13 on the season, while the Bluejays dropped to 20-13-1.

Junior Zach Williamsen (2-2) earned the win, scattering six hits over 6.1 scoreless innings with one walk and a strikeout. The loss went to Taylor Elman (2-4), who allowed one run on one hit with 1.0 innings pitched and struck out three. Senior Anthony Falcone picked up his third save, striking out two and holding CU hitless in the final inning.

Senior Brett Bass and sophomore Clayton Taylor each finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Taylor also scored two runs and drove in another, and Bass tallied three RBI for the night.

A solo home run by Taylor got it started for Omaha, as he smashed his team-leading sixth homer of the year over the right field wall.

In the third, Bass came through with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to score Taylor and sophomore Collin Leif to make it 3-0.

The sixth inning saw sophomore Alex Schultz send a one-out double down the left field line, and Bass delivered again with an RBI double to right to extend the lead to 4-0.

Creighton threatened in the seventh, with Reagan Fowler leading off with a single up the middle. Brett Murray then doubled to center and advanced to third on the throw, with Fowler thrown out 8-4-2 at the plate. Joey Mancuso then drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but sophomore Sam Murphy got Omaha out of the inning unscathed, recording a pair of strikeouts.

The Bluejays broke up the shutout in the eighth inning, as Mike Gerber doubled to the right field corner with two outs to score Ryan Fitzgerald for the Bluejays' only run of the game.

In the ninth, Falcone came in to relieve senior Josh Bullock and downed the Jays in order with two strikeouts and a groundout, sealing the 4-1 Omaha win.

UNO returns to action on Friday, April 25, hosting North Dakota State in Summit League action. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
