OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha softball team (28-15) posted a doubleheader sweep of North Dakota (4-33) on Tuesday at Westside Field at Westbrook, 8-0 (5 inn.) and 10-0 (5 inn.).
The Mavericks are back at home this weekend to host IUPUI in the final Summit League home series this season. Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., and Saturday's single game is at Noon. Saturday is Senior Day, and UNO will honor its two seniors -
Dana Elsasser and
Amber Lutmer - prior to first pitch.
Omaha 8, North Dakota 0 (5 inn.)Dana Elsasser threw a five-inning no-hitter to boost UNO in game one.
Amber Lutmer was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and
Allie Mathewson was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Tonya Peterson was 2-for-2 with an RBI as well.
Campbell Ditto,
Lia Mancuso and
Tara Trede each had hits as well.
Peterson's RBI single to center field scored Ditto for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Lutmer crushed her Summit-leading 15th homer of the season over the scoreboard in the third inning after a Mathewson single to make it 3-0.
The Mavs doubled the lead in the fourth inning to go up 6-0. Peterson and Mancuso led off the fourth with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. Trede then reached first when the second baseman's foot came off the bag on the attempted putout, and Peterson scored after Mathewson's grounder to second was thrown home high. Lutmer laced a two-run single to left field for the 6-0 lead, her fourth RBI of the day. Mathewson's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth ended the game by run rule.
Elsasser (22-7) pitched the first no-hitter of her career, striking out five. She walked two and hit one batter, but otherwise fooled the UND batters all day.
Omaha 10, North Dakota 0 (5 inn.)Lizzie Noble hit a first-inning grand slam, and
Cheyenne Baxter (4-0) cruised in the circle to another strong outing.
Amber Lutmer was 2-for-2 with four RBI and her 16th homer of the year.
After Noble's grand slam to left in the first set the tone, Lutmer singled home
Allie Mathewson in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 lead. UNO tacked on five more in the third.
Lia Mancuso had an RBI triple off the top of the wall in center field, and
Tara Trede had an RBI single. Lutmer crushed her three-run bomb in the third to finish the scoring.
Baxter allowed four hits and one walk with two strikeouts. The Mavericks played solid defense all day, committing no errors.
