BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Omaha softball team rolled to a pair of wins at South Dakota State on Friday, taking the doubleheader 6-0 and 11-2 (6 inn.) at the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
With the victories, the Mavericks improved to 25-15 overall and 6-5 in Summit League play. South Dakota State fell to 7-28 overall and 2-12 in the Summit League.
The teams finish the series on Saturday with a game at Noon.
Omaha 6, South Dakota State 0The Mavs finally broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth with four runs and added two more in the seventh for the 6-0 win.
Dana Elsasser (20-7) allowed just four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
The Mavs chipped away with seven hits - six of them singles - before finally cracking Ashlyn Bender in the sixth with four runs, all with two outs.
Amber Lutmer walked with one out gone, then pinch-runner
Nicole Warren stole second. With two down,
Campbell Ditto walked and
Lizzie Noble singled to load the bases.
Mara Eeman walked to score Warren, and
Tonya Peterson came up with an RBI single to score Ditto.
Bailey Schulenberg came in to pinch hit and singled through the left side to score Noble for the 3-0 lead.
Tara Trede then notched an infield single to bring home Eeman to make it 4-0.
In the seventh,
Sydney Hames doubled home Lutmer after she walked again. Noble then smacked an RBI single to score pinch-runner
Megan Stegman.
Noble was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Trede was 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Mavericks' five through nine hitters combined to go 6-for-17 with five RBI.
Omaha 11, South Dakota State 2 (6 inn.)Omaha wasted no time in getting on the board in game two, blasting SDSU pitcher Katie Lang for three runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second to jump out to an 8-0 lead.
Lizzie Noble set the tone with a three-run home run in the first inning. She added an RBI single in the second, as did
Sydney Hames and
Tonya Peterson (two-run single).
UNO freshman pitcher
Cheyenne Baxter (3-0) took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and surrendered just one earned run on three hits, one walk and with one strikeout.
The Jackrabbits scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to make it 8-2, but the Mavs put three more on the board in the sixth to reach the run rule. Hames started it with a single and Ditto walked. After a pair of outs, pinch-hitter
Nicole Warren homered to left field for the 11-2 lead. It was the first homer of the freshman's career.
Noble was 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead four Mavericks with two hits.
Allie Mathewson,
Amber Lutmer and Hames all had two hits as well.
