FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Omaha softball team dropped a doubleheader at Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon, 3-0 and 3-1.
The Mavericks are now 21-15 overall and 3-5 in Summit League play. Fort Wayne extended its league-best record to 29-11 overall and 8-2 in the Summit League.
The series wraps up with a 10 a.m. (CT) game on Saturday.
Fort Wayne 3, Omaha 0Alex Bousquet hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to give the Mastodons a 3-0 lead, which is all IPFW pitcher Miranda Kramer needed.
Cheyenne Baxter relieved
Dana Elsasser (18-7) in the bottom of the fourth and pitched 2.2 perfect innings. Elsasser went 3.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Amber Lutmer walked and
Campbell Ditto doubled to put Mavs on second and third with one out in the sixth, but Kramer struck out consecutive Maverick batters to get out of the inning with the 3-0 lead intact.
Ditto was 1-for-3 with a double, while
Mara Eeman and
Tara Trede each had singles.
Fort Wayne 3, Omaha 1The Mastodons took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and used another third-inning home run, this one a two-run shot by Hillary Kartman, to go up 3-0 on the Mavs.
UNO pulled a run back in the seventh inning on an
Allie Mathewson RBI double to score
Tara Trede, who had reached on a bunt single. But it was too late for the Mavs.
Kat Barrow (1-6) started the game and allowed three earned runs in 2.2 innings on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Cheyenne Baxter was solid again in relief, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing no runs on two hits, two walks and one strikeout. For the day, she threw 6.0 shutout innings of relief with just two hits against her.
Mathewson was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and also stole a base, while
Lizzie Noble added a double.
