OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha softball team split its Summit League doubleheader on Friday with South Dakota, winning game one 3-1 before falling 15-6 in the nightcap.
The Mavericks are 18-10 overall and 1-1 in the Summit League. South Dakota is 18-11 and 1-1 in the league. The teams finish the three-game series on Saturday at Noon.
Omaha 3, South Dakota 1The Mavericks tallied just three hits in the game, but two were home runs by
Lizzie Noble and
Amber Lutmer, and
Dana Elsasser shut down the Coyotes for the win in the series opener.
Kassie Loe's RBI double in the second scored Morgan Hancock from second base to put the Coyotes up 1-0 early.
USD pitcher Rachel Cue took a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth, but
Sydney Hames led off with a single to left field to break it up. Noble followed immediately with her third homer of the season, a two-run shot to center field to put the Mavs up 2-1. Lutmer smacked a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth to give the Mavs a 3-1 cushion.
Elsasser allowed just four hits with one earned run, five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 15-4 this season. Cue took the loss to fall to 8-6.

Kat Barrow for three runs in the top of the first to jump in front 3-0. But the Mavs responded in the bottom half with a leadoff double by
Allie Mathewson, a
Campbell Ditto hit by pitch and an
Amber Lutmer walk to load the bases for
Sydney Hames with no outs. Hames laced a single to right field to score Mathewson and Ditto to cut the deficit to 3-2. South Dakota brought Rachel Cue back in after pitching all of game one, and she immediately struck out three straight batters to end the threat.
The Mavs again loaded the bases in the second for Hames on a single by
Lia Mancuso, double by Mathewson and intentional walk to Lutmer. Hames lined a pitch right up the middle to score two for a 4-3 lead.
However, Allie Daly gave USD the lead right back with a two-run homer to left field in the top of the third.
Cheyenne Baxter came on to relieve Barrow and the Coyotes tacked on one more for a 6-4 lead after their at bat in the third. Daly's second homer of the game in the fourth inning - a two-run shot to center field - gave the Coyotes a 9-4 lead. USD added four more runs in the sixth for a 13-4 lead.
Lutmer and Hames extended the game with back-to-back home runs to pull the Mavs within 13-6 in the sixth. But USD put two more on the board in the top of the seventh for the 15-6 win.
Hames was 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI. Mathewson and Mancuso each had two hits, while Lutmer was 1-for-1 with her homer and three walks.
