KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Omaha softball team dropped two games on Saturday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Mavericks fell 6-2 to Fordham and 3-2 to Illinois State on a walk-off single.
The Mavs (12-6) wrap up play on Sunday against No. 23 Notre Dame at 11 a.m. (CT).
Fordham 6, Omaha 2Allie Mathewson's two-run homer in the top of the third gave the Mavs a 2-0 lead, but Fordham came back with three runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Kat Barrow (1-3) took the loss, throwing 5.2 innings with three earned runs and 11 hits given up. She had four strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, the Mavs got just five hits off of Fordham's Michele Daubman. Mathewson's homer in the third was the only extra-base hit.
With two outs gone and a runner on first in the bottom of the third, Fordham (6-11) put together three singles and two doubles to go up 3-2.
The Mavs didn't muster another hit until the top of the seventh inning, but by then trailed 6-2 after three unearned runs following a throwing error by the Mavs in the bottom of the sixth.
Illinois State 3, Omaha 2The Redbirds won the game on a walk-off single by Laura Canopy with one out gone in the bottom of the seventh.
Omaha jumped in front 2-0 in the second on a homer by
Lizzie Noble after a double by
Sydney Hames.
But Illinois State (6-12) scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie the game. After a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, the Redbirds got a one-out single by Kara Repp and Elsasser hit Nichelle Harrison to put runners on first and second for Canopy. She singled up the middle to bring home Repp for the winning run.
Elsasser (9-2) allowed two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. ISU's Regan Romshek (5-6) allowed two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Hames was the only Maverick with a two-hit game on the day.
Amber Lutmer went 0-for-3 and didn't reach base in the game, bringing an end to her 50-game reached base streak dating back to last season.
